Oh, Craigslist: How I love thee. . .

Bad/Funny Craigslist story:

Last week my wife listed some baby formula coupons she had for free. We didn’t need them and she just wanted to do a good deed. She had 3 different kinds. These aren’t just “coupons”, mind you, they’re worth about $20 each. One of the responses she got was from MyStuffForSale@______.com, asking if she could have all 3, as her baby uses them all. Yeah, sure .

Good Craigslist story:

'Bout a year and a half ago we wanted a little white dog. Turns out little white dogs are almost always several hundred dollars on Craigslist and sell in about 30 seconds. Not to be deterred, I was sitting in front of the computer one day clicking refresh and one came up. Ten months old, white pomapoo, $50. No picture, though, hmmmm, must be ugly. I called anyway and the lady was a little surprised how fast she got a call, but she believed me about how many calls she was about to get when her call-waiting started blowing up. I had to go to a dentist appointment and she was on the other end of the valley but she said she’d hold the puppy for me. I did not believe her for one second based on past experience with Craigslist, but sure enough when I got out of the dentist I called her and she said she was waiting for me. I drove over and the cutest, friendliest, most loving little puppy in the world greeted me at the door. We’ve been inseparable ever since.

My brother is a devoted Craigslist surfer, and found a gem just last week. Apparently, a woman found out her husband was cheating on her, so she put his $20K Harley up for sale for $100. Turns out someone walking by saw the bike and she ended up selling it to him for $150.

I don’t think I’d want to be around when hubby gets home.

Those are the best sales every. Woman gets a divorce, takes all of the guys fishing equipment just to spite him. Then I buy them for next to nothing!

We had our kitten get loose and I posted it on CL. Neighbors the next block over had found him and called up.

Found two phones in a cab a couple of months ago. Posted in CL and reunited them both with their owners within a few days.

Not to highjack too much, but how do they make their money? Do they charge for ads?

No but in Phoenix it’s $25 to place a job ad since we had so many scams being posted. The blatantly obvious ones are gone now but unfortunately the good scammers can afford $25.

Craigslisters love free shit.

I listed an old broken rear projection TV on CL last year. I figured I might have a little difficulty getting rid of it. Well, as soon as my ad appeared online –the phone started ringing off the hook. A bunch of people left messages (I wasn’t answering), but most would just hang up and call right back. Repeatedly. I immediately edited our phone number out of the ad, but it took about 20 minutes to update online, and in that time the phone rang non-stop. We were still getting occasional calls 3 hours later and I probably had over 50 emails on the 40 minutes or so that my ad was up. I called the first voicemailer back. He was thrilled to get a 9 year old broken TV.

It’s amazing to me how many beggars are on CL. I read the “wanted” category the most; every hour there are posters asking for cash, cars, food, etc. Lots of posts playing the “single mom needs” angle and of course they all end with “God Bless”. I used to flag most of those, but now I leave them up to see the RO other posters express over the begging.

It’s mostly free, guess no one can really complain…

There was a website that my local news plugged a couple years ago called Freecycle IIRC. They made it sound really neat and community-spirity so I checked it out a few times. It was pretty much this x100.

I tried Freecycle. It’s a Yahoo group that you can access on the web but it’s mainly a mailing list. I managed to snag one item worth several hundred dollars and I gave away a few things, but overall I don’t think it’s worth it. Too many of the posts are things like “OFFER: bag of pens and pencils” that is isn’t worth spending the time or gas to get unless the person is on the way to somewhere else you’re going. I don’t find the time it takes to look through the listings to be worth it. Half of the stuff is gone by the time you reply anyway.

Freecycle is awesome for getting rid of things that you thought you’d have to pay to get rid of. I just got rid of a non-working computer monitor and a non-working DVD/VCR combo yesterday. I also got rid of all my packing supplies (boxes, bubble wrap, and peanuts). I posted all three of those offers Wednesday evening, they were all gone by last night.

I’ve also gotten some good stuff on Freecycle - a George Foreman grill, a bunch of tomatoes, a Shakespeare compilation.

It’s hit and miss for getting things, but awesome for getting rid of things that you can’t get people to pay for.

Lol, I can just imagine the people who picked those up taking them home and setting them in a corner, only to serve as things for discarded fast food wrappers and empty soda cans to land on when tossed, until the day the die and their kids have to rummage through their nest.

 The woman who took the monitor says her son works on computer parts, so he was interested in seeing if he could fix it, and the woman who took the DVD/VCR runs a daycare and said the nonworking thing would keep the kids entertained for weeks. I guess they’ll take it apart?

But I like your visual better.
