It was almost as shocking as this:

> Funny, isn’t it? I have been persuaded that Bush is going the wrong way overall, but that doesn’t mean that I’ve gone over to the dark side. It just means that I have a mind and the integrity to change it.

Clap Clap Clap!

That took some courage and some thought, coming from someone (judging from your posts) right-leaning as yourself…kudos!

I have asserted (maybe not here) that Bush isn’t even a good conservative; he just jacks up his base now and then to make it seem that way.

Anyway, sorry for the sidetrack…in reference to the subject at hand, I tend to agree with **Jonathan Chance** in that they are just burning in a simple symbolic negative image (Hitler) to associate with Kerry. There’s no factual basis, of course (see Saddam & 9/11 references), but the image gets planted, and people who don’t think about it too much (like, oh, 90% of the electorate) will perhaps be influenced by that.

Another thing that ties into this is the whole Cheney “fuck yourself” thing. IMHO, that was no accident or “poor choice of words”. It was intended to jack up their (angry white man) base. I can see Joe Six-pack seeing that on TV and thinking “now there’s a real guy with balls - he just told that liberal faggot to go fuck himself!”

No. I stand by my original e-mail.

I now understand that this was a ham-handed attempt at evoking the [moveon.org](http://moveon.org) Bush-equals-Hitler controversy. However, it’s too much like being at a party where someone is cracking jokes about something that none of the other partygoers are privy to. I did not see the [moveon.org](http://moveon.org) ad and was not familiar with the controversy until it was brought up in this thread. I can only assume that most Americans didn’t see the [moveon.org](http://moveon.org) ad, either, and would naturally come to the same conclusions.

And today, almost as if on cue, Al Gore did exactly that. Essentially he turned a poor ad, worthy of criticism, into something suddenly relevant and factually correct.

Yes, that’s exactly right. The situations are not comparable. The campaign site did not compare the opposition to Nazis. The former _Vice President of the fuggin United States and Democratic candidate for President and still major figure in the party_ did compare the opposition to Nazis. The former is a dumb fuckup; the latter is far worse **and** had the unintentional consequence of making the dumb fuckup less dumb.

Hope that helps.

We Agree, It’s Disgusting

Dear Simon,

On Thursday, the campaign launched a web video titled Kerry’s Coalition of the Wild-eyed. The video featured Democrats who support John Kerry making negative and baseless attacks against the President. Interspersed in the video were segments of two ads that appeared on a website sponsored by [MoveOn.org](http://MoveOn.org) - a group campaigning for Kerry - in January.

On Friday night, John Kerry’s campaign denounced our use of these ads, and called that use “disgusting.”

The Kerry campaign says, “The use of Adolf Hitler by any campaign, politician or party is simply wrong.”

We agree. These ads, like much of the hate-filled, angry rhetoric of Kerry’s coalition of the Wild-eyed, are disgusting.

Where was John Kerry’s disgust when he hired Zack Exley - the man responsible for encouraging the production of these ads as part of a MoveOn contest - to run the Kerry campaign’s internet operation?

Where was John Kerry’s sense of outrage when Al Gore, just yesterday afternoon, compared the Bush Administration to the Nazis saying, “The Administration works closely with a network of ‘rapid response’ digital Brown Shirts who work to pressure reporters and their editors for ‘undermining support for our troops.’”

Where was John Kerry’s anger when Al Gore in May spoke of “Bush’s Gulag”?

Why has John Kerry not denounced billionaire and Democrat Party donor George Soros for comparing the Bush Administration to Nazis. Soros stated, “When I hear Bush say, ‘You’re either with us or against us,’ it reminds me of the Germans. It conjures up memories of Nazi slogans on the walls, Der Feind Hort mit (‘The enemy is listening’).”

Why has Kerry not spoken out against filmmaker Michael Moore who last October compared the Patriot Act to Mein Kampf. “The Patriot Act is the first step. ‘Mein Kampf’ - ‘Mein Kampf’ was written long before Hitler came to power.”

We created this web video to show the depths to which these Kerry supporters will sink to win in November.

Is this the Democratic Party of Franklin Delano Roosevelt who reassured his countrymen we have nothing to fear but fear itself?

No. This is John Kerry’s Coalition of the Wild-eyed, who have nothing to offer but fear-mongering.

Sincerely,

Ken Mehlman
Campaign Manager

This is droll. Note the artful wording. Mr. Exley is not responsible for the ads, or the content of the ads, or even the production of the ads. He is guilty of the dastardly crime of _encouraging the production_ of these ads. And how did he manifest this encouragement? Is there any record of him suggesting themes for contestants? Or of suggesting imagery for maximum scurillous impact? How, precisely, did he go about this “encouragement”?

Mr. Roosevelt was wrong. We need, most definitely, to fear such men as would stoke and exploit our fears to their own ends.

Correct, although the ad did give at least some people (including former Bush supporters) that idea. But they did use Hitler imagery in an ad.

Yep. He sure did.

Are you even paying attention?

Al Gore != Kerry campaign
Al Gore != Democratic Party
However,
[www.georgewbush.com](http://www.georgewbush.com) = Bush campaign

The situations are not comparable.

Further, the response you suggest is not comparable.

About the same as the GOP and the 700 Club.

Certainly there is a lot of overlap between Moveon’s membership and Democrats. There is a lot of overlap between the GOP membership and the more wacko fundie organizations. But one does not mean the other.

Wow, you’d have to be a complete idiot to see this add as comparing Kerry to Hitler. In fact, if you’re confused about the [moveon.org](http://moveon.org) ad, it looks like this one is comparing \*\*Bush \*\* to Hitler.

It’s clear that a major theme of the Bush campaign is that that he represents an optimistic view of America and Kerry represents a pessimistic one. You may agree or disagree with that, but all this ad does is give a few snippets to back up Bush’s claim.

I can’t find anything at all in this ad that is any more manipulative than what is seen in pretty much every political ad out there.

Oh, I dunno. Seems to me that Al Gore is free to be so vociferous precisely because he _isn’t_ the acknowledged leader of the Party. How often do they rush to quote “Fightin’ Joe” Lieberman in shock and horror, isn’t he the secondary leader, if Gore is the primary?
