I don’t see how removing unions ability to bargain is screwing them over. For the most part, I’d say that it’s the unions screwing over everyone else. They tend to collect dues from individuals regardless of whether or not that individual wants to join said union (correct me if I’m wrong here), they negotiate higher wages for themselves and tend to negotiate perks that most of your average workers could only dream of. All the while, Average Joe pays for it.
But as I said, I don’t live in Ohio, so my opinion is in the grand scheme of things irrelevant. I just think it’s fascinating (sad?) to see people bend over and let unions actively screw them.
In what way is a negotiated contract equivalent to a screwing over? If management doesn’t like the terms, they are free to refuse to agree to the contract. How is that a screwing over?
Yeah. I voted here in Akron about 6:30. Off election—I would be the only one in line. Maybe 2 of us. There were six people voting, five waiting. It’s all about issue 2. Pubbies screwed the pooch on this one in Ohio.
Put kindly, unions are the proverbial big bully in the neighborhood. In many instances, businesses don’t have much of a choice in negotiating with them, as the union nudges people to join them, meaning if a business wants to hire workers, they must negotiate with the union first. Unions then go about setting up all sorts of perks for themselves non-union workers simply don’t enjoy, regardless of the ability of the business to meet those obligations (this was one of the USPS’ problems) and, to top it all off, if they don’t like their present circumstance or feel they’re getting short changed, they strike.
Edit: Also, iirc, there was a provision in SB5 which made it illegal to strike. Now I don’t know what the strike rules are in Ohio, but I’m wondering what will happen if, in the near future, some union deemed critical, i.e., teachers, go on strike? Luckily, I live in Florida, and teachers are barred from doing so.
It’s extortion when workers collectivize to bargain with employers, but not extortion when employers exploit workers who are powerless because they can’t join a union?
We’ve SEEN what businesses do without unions to counterbalance them. Company stores, perpetual indebtedness, working and living conditions that are just horrifying…without unions, we’d still have those conditions.
Unions may have had a place way back in the 20’s, but nowadays many of the conditions which led to unions forming in the first place simply don’t exist anymore. For the most part, unions no longer work for the worker, but work for themselves. While I won’t say every union is bad, many unions today strong arm employers into ridiculous contracts which benefit the union and its members at the expense of everyone else.

The schools will close for a couple of days. Were you alive at any point during the last, oh, sixty years?

Again, I happen to live in Florida. Teachers aren’t allowed to strike. So it doesn’t happen here. I am, however, kind of humored at the idea of a teacher striking instead of teaching.
Having worked alongside some of the products from Southern, “right to work state”, schools… I will say they’re better educated than Northern inner city school graduates.
But considering the teachers at inner city schools are mostly the ones that couldn’t find work anywhere else, and a lot of those kids are from broken homes… It doesn’t say a whole lot.
My ex applied to teach in Winchester Virginia area about 12 years ago. At that time, the starting pay wouldn’t have covered renting a 2 br house in the district, utilities, AND food. This is a good thing for the children (aka “future taxpayers”), how? Because they’re not edjumicated enough to know when they’re being screwed?
The last few hard right lurches by the Republican Party has made what used to be the lunatic fringe the new ‘party base’. Lincoln wouldn’t recognize the new GOP, TR would denounce it. And even Reagan would be a RiNO… Unless being “Conservative” stops being synonymous with “Selfish Prick” and “Billionaire Bootlicker”, I’m thinking it will become increasingly irrelevant as a party anywhere that folks have more than a 4th grade education… so maybe that’s the REAL rationale for the GOPs war on teachers?
I’ve been registered as an R for 20 years… I’m going Indie, I think
It’s not just proverbial. Unions have a history of beating and killing people who have opposed them. That’s why they’ve always been cozy with the mob.
Those conditions went away because of capitalism and economic growth. All unions can do is concentrate available benefits on their members to the exclusion of others. They don’t produce anything; in fact, they reduce productivity.
But if the past sins of a minority may be used to justify present policy, unions should be outright illegal, because of their history of violence and organized crime.
YEAH! DAMN RIGHT! Let’s get those useless leeches off the taxpayers teat and let them get a REAL JOB! Stop mooching off the taxpayers you Military Welfare Queens!
oh, Wait. Those are the GOOD government employees, aren’t they.
