“Safe railroad” could be a loose term meaning they transport a lot of safes.
Calling Dagny Taggart!
(Wish we could do up- or downvotes here, because I would recommend doing one or the other if anyone “got it.”)
Shrugs, it’s on my retirement list.
Well, if they have fewer incidents than other railroads then they are “safer.”

Norfolk Southern found loose wheels on a series of rail cars involved in last week’s derailment near Springfield, Ohio, the company has announced, the latest safety problem to emerge as scrutiny intensifies on the operator – and US freight safety broadly – following that wreck, a toxic derailment five weeks ago in another Ohio town and a derailment Thursday in Alabama.
-
In probing the Springfield wreck scene Sunday, the company “determined that a specific model and series of rail cars had loose wheels, which could cause a derailment,” officials said Thursday in a statement, calling it an “urgent railcar safety issue.”

As a result, the Association of American Railroads issued an advisory to halt the use of these cars until they can be inspected for the wheel sets in question. It instructs railroad companies to inspect and remove wheel sets “mounted by National Steel Car” between August and this month because “these wheels sets are at an increased risk of an out of gauge derailment,” states the advisory, which the trade group sent to CNN.
Or to put it in simpler terms… DOH
NBC posted this article saying they have regrets about burning the train car after the derailment.
Why did NBC burn a rail car in the first place? Not their job.
Careful writing is its own reward.
Today, under questioning from Senator JD Vance (R-OH), National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Chair Jennifer Homendy revealed that the chemical explosion in East Palestine, Ohio was not necessary and that the chemical experts who advised against the “vent and burn” were ignored.
Senator Vance: “This town very well may have been poisoned to facilitate the rapid movement of freight”
And? Remember Mr. Vance you’re from the party that put profits over people when it was Covid in question.
I am surprised it settled this quickly.
Burn-off of toxics in Ohio derailment was unnecessary, NTSB investigators say [Repost of Washington Post article]
After hearing from investigators, board members will vote Tuesday on their final findings and recommendations, including the probable cause of the derailment; the NTSB’s full final report will follow several weeks later.
