January 6th was simply the most visible part of a coordinated conspiracy to test the limits of our democracy. Remember that the point of the “unarmed protest” “breaking a couple of windows” was to pressure a sitting Vice President into not certifying the results of a legitimate election. Specific Republicans were in place to object to the certification, alternate slates of electors had been established, etc. This was a fully documented plan with lots of moving parts. You know all that, right? ---

This was none of that. A bunch of children running amok in the Capital building in an event allowed to happen by Democrats. They had no chance of pressuring the Vice President or anybody else including the janitor. ---

On January 6, 2021, 140 police officers were injured, some quite seriously. One lost an eye. Over a million dollars in damage was done to the Capitol. Multiple members of the group were armed with firearms, bear spray and assorted makeshift weapons, as well as zipcuffs. The mob stated the clear intent to “hang Mike Pence” while the crowd outside constructed a gallows. They pursued elected officials through the halls until in one instance an officer had to shoot one of them to get them to stop. Throughout all of this, President Trump not only refused to condemn these actions but actively encouraged it. And when it finally wound down four hours later, he praised the mob that had attacked the Capitol and police and repeated the falsehoods that had incited them in the first place.
