I distinctly remember watching the Bronco chase on TV – I was 12, and my mother had invited some work friends over to pick blackberries from our prodigious fields of wild berries. When the chase started they all gathered in the living room to watch the live broadcast. This is the first big news event I remember watching in real time. A few weeks ago my students watched “Shrek 2” in class. When the reference to “pursuit of a white Bronco” appeared I laughed out loud. Nobody else got the joke. Kids these days… As for O.J., good riddance. I’m not one to wish death on anyone but I’m not going to shed any tears over him. ---

I believe I was watching the Knicks in the NBA final when it cut to the stupid Bronco chase. I was possibly flipping between the Knicks and a Yankees game. ---

As most of you know, I’m German, and I’ve never had any interest in American Football, so in 1994 I couldn’t have named any football player at all. But I was a big fan of the Naked Gun movies, so when the first news about a football star arrested for murder in LA arrived here and I saw the photos, I thought “Damned, that’s Nordberg!” I’ve caught up and learned a lot about his personal history in the last 30 years, I saw a several hours long documentary about his life (can’t remember what it was called, but it was extensive), now I despise him and don’t have any tears to shed over his death, but damn, I liked him in Naked Gun. ---

The Bronco chase and arrest happened during my senior year at uni, but both court cases concluded after I’d moved to L.A. My film school freshman class gathered in a screening room to watch the first verdict, then went back to critiquing the first short films of the year. A year later, I was at an internship in Santa Monica, and the civil trial was happening not far away. We could see LAPD helicopters circling, bracing themselves for unrest in the case of a guilty verdict, though nothing much happened. As I was too young to ever see him play football, even if I gave a damn about the sport, thus endeth all of my non-_Naked Gun_ memories of O.J. ---

Well, he never took responsibility for his horrible crime, so I have no pity or regrets regarding his passing. He never found the real killer because he was the real killer. As he reached the end, one wonders what his final thoughts were. ---
