As others have pointed out, a conspiracy requires several people working together, and it requires planning. I just don’t see how this was possible in the OJ case. Also, I don’t think they would have sufficient motivation to get it done. “Ok, lets get a blood sample and drop it at the crime scene, cause I’m pretty sure he killed this woman.” You think any of these cops had never seen a murder scene before? They weren’t full of righteous indignation, and they weren’t going to risk their jobs and futures without some real incentive. Crooked cops don’t just run around framing murderers, they need a cash incentive plan!
Wow, JoeyBlades, I’m a racist for believeing OJ to be guilty. Please elucidate for me how you came to such a conclusion.
I can’t wait to hear this laid out by an amateur philosopher like yourself.
I suppose trying to catch the animal that butchered your ex-wife within 100 feet of your two innocent children isn’t a clear motivator in your mind…?
Freedom, a lot of jurisdictions have residency requirements for their police officers. In other words, if you are a cop or firefighter in Brentwood, you’ve got to live in Brentwood, or be able to get to Brentwood within x number of minutes. Not only does this provide a connection to the people they serve, but it’s also practical in emergency situations.
My point was that NO ONE wants a homocidal maniac running loose, esp. one that strikes at random. If nothing else, it’s really bad P.R. for the police department.
Since some people are convinced it wasn’t O.J., I guess the real killer has turned over a new leaf. I certainly haven’t read about similar murders…
Random crimes are not as common as you think. Most people have got to be pretty damn intimate with someone to work up enough fury at them to cut them to pieces*. That’s a crime of passion and hatred, people. You’re more likely to be killed by someone that knows you for just that reason.
*In real life, anyway. On these boards, you can be skewered for the pettiest of offenses.
For the conspiracy theorists go, I’ll ask you how these cops communicated to one another? Over the radio? Where any Tom, Dick and Harry can hear their communications with a $25 police scanner? Over a cell phone? Or did they stop at the local Wendy’s and make a call at a pay phone? How did they concoct this conspiracy?
Lucky:
Consider the other alternative. OJ committed the murders, hung around for at least 30 minutes to trod through dried blood, then went back in time approximately 30 minutes, and got cleaned up before answering the door for his driver… Also, the 90 minutes was based on an estimate that assumed that the blood dried naturally, but it’s pretty easy to soften up blood and make a shoe impression several hours later…
No, disreputable_1,
I didn’t label your remarks as racist because you believe OJ is guilty, I believe he’s guilty. I labeled your remarks as racist because you assume that a predominantly black jury would acquit OJ because he’s black. Do you think blacks have a lower moral standard than whites? Maybe you think black people are not intelligent enough to weigh the facts and make a fair judgement?
PunditLisa asks:
Well, I was being somewhat facetious, but when it comes down to it, I think OJ was much more motivated by the possiblility of going to jail for the rest of his life, or worse…
[[Knowing that the police were in the habit of manufacturing evidence makes me wonder about the overwhelming evidence. What was real evidence, and what was planted?]]
I figured from the beginning: both. Court cases aren’t about knowing the truth, but proving the truth. If there’s any indication that the cops altered stuff, then the guy gets off.
People, I believe he is guilty, but he is not the only rich slob who has beaten the system.
I fail to see why so many people have gotten worked up over the verdict. I think Claus von Bulow was guilty of trying to assassinate his wife, but few people expressed outrage over his acquittal. IIRC, Mike Royko wrote at least one column about a rich man in the Chicago area who may have weaseled out of a murder rap, but that case caused scarcely a ripple in the national consciousness.
I look at it this way: a rich black SOB beat the rap whereas in the past only rich white SOBs beat the rap. We are making progress, slowly but surely.
