OK, everyone. How did you find this place

Found the SD on AOL… Don’t remember how exactly. Followed it through a number of years and it’s move here.

Glad to see you’re here, Tyler.

Lately, it’s been an off and on thing because of writing cirriculum every now and again–have to start another project this summer–I’m enjoying the time here while I can.

Sealemon sent me a url of a thread on why people hate Canadians. That was enough to make me register

I was bored one day and a friend brought me here, I am just a new straightdoper! So be truthful.

whatever

While searching for some information on bugs on AOL, back in '98, it gave me a link to the SD Homepage on AOL. After reading the article about someone nuking roaches (or something like that), and finding it humorous, I decided to start reading the columns every day, by some man named “Cecil Adams.”

I lurked on the AOL boards for a long while before joining this board when AOL shut down the SD. I remember Shirley Ujest was “Joan. Just Joan.” (I remember her because she lives in MI, my home state)

I used to watch the show religously, and was heartbroken when it went off the air. Mike Lukas was so cool! I miss you Mike! Anyway, I loved the show, and I used to go online everyday, and read Cecil’s columns. I still have about 150 of em’ printed out. Then one magical day, I came across one of the Straight Dope books (I think it was Tells All), so I bought it. I read it end to end several times. I ** LOVED ** the parts about the message board, and I read them more that I read the rest of the book. So, I came to deify the board, and quickly resolved that I was not good enough to grace it. By the way, Tubadiva is still a celebrity in my book. However, eventually I worked up the courage to join about a year later. So, here I am. I love you guys, yer my extended family. SNIFF SNIFF

** GOOFY… GOOFY ** You BASTARD! THAT GOOFY SHOW WAS MY RELIGION FOR AWHILE! It was the sole light in the darkness of adolescence. Death to you!

Kind of by accident actually.
A friend of mine at work (aka kinoons)was laughing his ass off, and I asked him what was so funny.
He told me it was the straight dope and gave me the URL. I checked it out and wham, I was hooked.
So hooked that when it went down a couple of weeks later, I coined the phrase
“This site is more addictive than caramel-covered crack!”

And here I am, 350-some-odd posts later, a dope fiend.

On AOL, I was looking for useless facts to entertain myself with (this was in 1996, yeah, I was dull back then). One of these “useless facts” sites was Straight Dope. The first column I read was about if there really was a Santa Clause. After that and reading the archives, it became my home page. Still is, to this day.

Santa Claus. Excuse me.

I don’t really remember. I think I was surfing the internet and came across a link.

Maybe it was from www.badastronomy.com while looking into science not right.

Or perhaps it was an atheist discussion site. (I recall somewhere seeing a link to teemingmillions somewhere and checking out some of the people without knowing what it was about.)

Or it could have been a skeptical page, like Donald Simanek’s web page. (No I haven’t been through all those links, darn it. Got distracted.)

Or maybe it was an internet search looking for information on some urban legend.

I really don’t know. I’ll I know is I saw the words “Straight Dope” and was afraid I’d gotten sent to a druggie site. But then I read an article. Then another. Then went through the archive. Eventually I was reading the three columns once a week. Finally decided to peek into comments and hit the comment thread and found the message board. First I cruised the comment on columns forums. After months of that I got bored one day and looked over the wall into General Questions. Maybe followed a relocated thread to MPSIMS. Now I’m stuck, and I can’t get out! They even dragged me to a gasp real life meeting! NO, I CAN’T TAKE IT ANYMORE! HELP!!!

whack, thump, garble garble

Whew, much better now.

Well, I started dealing “caramel-covered crack” as lexicon so chooses to call this site about 2 years ago when I had myself seen the television show. Then I started to read the site for its boundless wealth of knowlage. THen I took a hit off my own crack and opened the message board…deffently not good. I have the decline in my job performance to prove it too…

Kinooning it up for 20 years and counting

I asked Lexicon what the hell is so funny… (I heard him laughing hysterically behind me).
Lex: “…check this out…”

And here I am.
I knew of the Straightdope from the local weekly rag, but never bothered to check online. Silly me.
