OK, Here I Go.... (Hurricane related)

And last night, evacuation helicopters had to abandon the Superdome refugees because of sub-humans firing at the copters

It’s easy to see now why Mayor Nagin was so reluctant to use the Superdome as a shelter.

We shouldn’t criticise people for not evacuating themselves from NO.

If you look at the pictures on TV, it seems most were poor, frail or disabled, which makes this event even more tragic.

The TV images I saw showed the standed as being almost entirely blacks (who I presume make up a large portion of 30% living below the poverty line in NO), the very obese and elderly.

These are the people who did not have the means to evacuate and were in need the most help.

On another question asked earlier in the thread - the Australian government has donated 10 million as a gesture of goodwill. I know people have argued that this is what the USA spends in Iraq in one hour, but at least it is something.

A hijack worth making. Thanks for the info, antechinus.

Many foreign governments have already sent aid and mobilized relief workers to help victims of Katrina. Please, let’s not play the “now scratch my back!” card anymore.

Why would people be shooting at the rescuers?

Eh. Can’t really count them because of the possibility of horrific cold snaps, Canadian invasion, inevitable ice ages with all-crushing glaciers, and the possibility of having to live directly across the border from Sam Stone.

Panic. Stupidity. Anger. Frustration. “Why the fuck are they picking up that guy when I’m stuck here half a block away? Come get meeeee!”

-Joe

And that is, of course, a great incentive for someone to come and get you. Yeah, if you want someone to come to save you, try to kill them. Right.

Just goes to show you that criminals are criminals no matter where they are or what the circumstances.

Merijeek nailed it.

Panic. Stupidity. Anger. Frustration. “Why the fuck are they picking up that guy when I’m stuck here half a block away? Come get meeeee!”

Double-post brought to you courtesy of a router outage at an inopportune time.

-Joe, doubling your pleasure, doubling your fun, etc

I would just like to add, hopped up on stolen narcotics.

Airman Doors, USAF you are an uncaring asshole

Eleusis, glad nothing bad happened to you. Because if something bad did happen, Airman would be in here calling you a dumbfuck for not being prepared.

Eleusis: Well a tree fell on my house.
Airman: Well you were an idiot. Why didn’t you cut the tree down. You had a plenty of time to cut down all the trees that might fall on your house. In fact, why are you such a dumbshit to have trees planted around your house anyway. Even if you only have an axe, a grown man cut down a pecan tree every [insert some bullshit armchair math]…leaving you enough time to get in the house before the hurricane hits.

I don’t understand the lack of sympathy for people who didn’t have to ability to get out of a city. Others have pointed out that NO has a lot of poor people. They do not have cars. Even if they had a car, they might not have the money for two full gas tanks to get out of Dodge, and the gas tanks to get back. If they do have to money for gas, they might not have money for lodging and eating out in a strange city. Some people had to make a really tough shitty decision. Do I use the rent money to get out? If I do, it will mean coming back to an eviction. Or maybe I should stay and pray for the best.

For all you people who have no sympathy, is it just a hate of poor people?
How about the middle class family that made it to Memphis, but just found out that their house is gone, their job is gone. Now they are in a strange city with only a few hundred dollars to their names. Are they dumbfucks as well? For living in a city that is below sea level and in hurricane country, but not having six months salary put aside?

Yep. You got my number.
