OK, I give up: What is with corporations asking us to give $1 at the register?

So you always pay cash at fine restaurants?

I appreciate the perspective of those non-profit employees who see this as a godsend, but they are wrong. This sucks. It is spam. It must stop.

Yes, it is easy to say no and I always do. But being asked twice, once by the robot and again by the clerk, is just wrong. And stupid, and sense-bendingly fucked up. The charities being favored become whores. Stop it. Consider your clients. Be respectful.

Not every good thing needs to lick the ass of money because the ends justify the means.

There are two stores in my area whereat I no longer shop simply because there is always some “would you like to donate” to whatever’s in vogue at the moment. While I might find the charity of the moment worthwhile, as a matter of course I decline. Merely because I’m your customer doesn’t mean I’m your captive.

I would rather complete my transaction in the fastest way possible with as little harassment as possible. Granted, it only takes a few seconds; however, those are my seconds to while away, not theirs. Anything that lengthens my visit is a reason for me to shop elsewhere. And I do that.

This is also why I no longer shop at Barnes and Noble; I grew tired of being asked each time I approached the counter if I’d like to join their book club or whatever. If I’d wanted to join, I’d have done so the day before when the same clerk asked me then. Lengthen my stay and I’ll happily spend my money elsewhere.

How hard is it to leave one of those little change jars which is colorfully marked yet tastefully done and allow people to drop a quarter in at their leisure instead of trying to pigeonhole us? It’s annoying, to say the least.

Yes. I think I’ve payed once by card where it left my sight and it was at a non-franchised restaraunt with long term employees.

It’s all common sense and probability. The more you expose your credit and identity the more likely you’ll get hit. I NEVER pay by card at franchise box restaraunts where the servers rotate through like new menus unless I can pay at a register.

I know I can’t stop card fraud and identity theft but I can reduce the odds.
