I don’t know anyone who considers Texas a southern state, and I was beginning to worry about our education in geography for a while there. My first thought at the mention of OK being southern was “What? That’s over by Texas, and Texas sure the hell isn’t considered part of the south.” Texas is just Texas. Next people will start thinking NY is a New England state. ---

As far as it goes, a portion of Mexico is west of a portion of Texas. A portion of Mexico is west of Arizona but I doubt anyone living in Arizona would tell you that Mexico lies to the west. I’ll also bet no one in either Oklahoma or Texas would identify Texas as being west of Oklahoma and that includes people living in the part that is. ---

[/QUOTE] So you’re saying Texas is _south_west of Oklahoma? Doesn’t really change my point. Seriously, I have NEVER heard ANYONE say Texas isn’t a southern state. Yes, I was making a joke above, but there is truth to it. Arizona is FULL of Texans. I know and have met dozens upon dozens of them in my 5 years here. A typical conversation shortly after meeting someone is they either mention they’re from the south or I ask where they’re from and they reply “the south,” to which I say oh, me too, where abouts? “Texas.” ---

You know what, I retract all my statements in this thread and respectfully bow out of any further discussion over what is and isn’t “the south.” It occurred to me that this is the second dumbest argument I’ve ever had online. The dumbest argument I’ve ever had online was over whether or not the final cut of _Jersey Girl_ was what Kevin Smith originally intended it to be. The dumbest argument I’ve ever had in real life was over whether chrome was a functional accessory or a cosmetic feature. Don’t know how I let myself get sucked into that one. The dumbest argument I’ve ever witnessed in real life was when two brothers got into a brutal fist fight because one of them said you can help being stupid, but you can’t help being dumb, and the other insisted you can help being dumb, but you can’t help being stupid. Yup, those are the kind of arguments you witness when you grow up in the sou . . . nevermind :D. ---

The same is not true w.r.t. travelling southward from Alaska. You can, however, travel due south from Detroit and wind up in Windsor; you could also travel due south from Niagara Falls, New York, and wind up in Fort Erie, Ontario, should you have some burning desire to do so. And that (excluding minor border salients in Ontario and Quebec) is about it in terms of southward migration to Canada. If your definition of “south of” is that there are points in area A that are at a lower latitude than area B, you don’t even have to appeal to Alaska; more than half of Canada’s population live south of the 49th parallel, an area that includes nearly the entire populated area of Ontario and Quebec as well as the whole of the Maritimes the southern half of Newfoundland, and Victoria, B.C.
