Just pointing out some of the reasons why it’s hard to do it and why a lot of people don’t even really want to try. Especially in very conservative areas. When you spend life being told you’re going to hell, or must be a child molester, a bad person because you’re not giving your parents grandkids, being beaten up regularly, or any of the other myriad ways one gets looked down on, trusting the ‘general community’ can be a bit of a pipe dream. ---

I live in Texas and work in the oil industry. One morning, when my assistant was new, his partner dropped him off at work and gave him a quick goodbye kiss without knowing that my husband and I were there until he walked past our truck and I waved at him. He fully expected to get fired for being gay. Attitudes here in the middle of the Bible Belt are often strange to me. There are people here who honestly believe that spaying pregnant cats is abortion. I’m sure that someone with that sort of mindset would have no problem with trying to fix someone’s gayness by beating it out of them. ---

I take Twelfth St. west to Gage, which takes me right past the WBC compound, located just a few blocks to the east of Gage. Oh, BTW, the weekly sign up at the WBC compound states _“NO FAGS IN KING’S DREAM! GOD HATES ADULTERY! GOD HATES MLK!”_ There’s a biblical reference after that, but I didn’t catch it. ---

They don’t have souls unless the mother\* is spayed while pregnant, at which point God creates souls for the fetuses (feti?) so they can be considered aborted. Duh. Or perhaps all animals have souls _in utero_, but they’re removed at birth — in much the same way as a human child’s life ceases to have value once it’s born, at least in the eyes of some conservatives. \ ***Leaper** specifically mentions cats, but I presume the same principle applies to dogs, hamsters and musk oxen. ---
