I always figure that the one year I don’t have something for the little mooches is the year I get swarmed by them.

Oy! Nothing like getting roused out of your apartment by someone pounding the door yelling “FIRE!”

I had heard the party upstairs and a loud BOOM, but didn’t want to stick my head out in case someone was armed.

The weed dealer upstairs was doing the pounding. There were a couple of vehicles in the carport on the inside of the quad that caught on fire. None of buildings were on fire, but the two apartments closest to the vehicles got some smoke. The fire department set them up with big fans to vent that out and helped a couple of old folks upstairs back to their homes.

Nothing like meeting all of the neighbors at once than standing outside in your jammies in the middle of the night with dogs and kids. Now to get back to bed.

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. _YAWN_ ‘Tis 62 Amurrkin out and cloudy with a predicted high of 73 with rain expected around nine a.m. and lastin’ throughout the day. We shall see. The big item on today’s agenda is deheathenization followed by first Sunday brunch. It’s All Saints Day and I shall serve as second Verger/Acolyte herder. There will be a solemn procession durin’ the processional (DUH!) hymn, which is _For All The Saints._ Look it up if you’re curious. I shall also have my three p.m. group, so no nappage today.

**shoe** you look _mah-ve-lous_!

**red** YIKES! Glad none of the buildin’s caught fire. Hope you got some sleep after all that.

Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then purtification for deheathenization shall commence.

Happy Sunday/All Saints Day Y’all!

Morning, mumpers! It’s curently 9c/48f with a predicted high of 11c/52f and mostly cloudy. Weather app says “If this fucking weather was soup, it would be Cream of fucking Belly Button Lint.”

**hippie** I saw your quilt pics on FB, that is a truly stunning piece of work! Happy shopping on big discount day too 🙂

**Oopsie** glad to hear your dad’s op went well, but sorry to hear HusbandBFF is poorly and you were needed over there instead of doing Hallowe’en stuff. I hope he has a good outcome!

**metalmouse** I know, staying in on a Saturday night is a rare thing for us! We did go out on Friday though, and sometimes we do just need a bit of time to recharge. We watched some films and had stoofvlees for dinner which had been in the slow cooker all day, making the house smell yummy.

> [@Aspenglow](#):
>
> What films did you decide on?

We started our afternoon off with “Fuze” which was full of unexpected turns, then followed it with “28 Year Later: The Bone Temple”, then a short break so 'im indoors could have a snooze 🙂 before we watched “Forbidden Fruits” and then “Tuner” to finish off. I was ready for my bed after that little movie marathon!

**Cookie** I am sorry about the loss of your Le Creuset dish, it’s hard to part with something you’ve had for so long and seen so much use out of. Hopefully the replacement will be just as good. I still have a hard time forgiving my neighbour for breaking one of my Denby dishes, I’ve never been able to replace it because I bought it from their factory shop and the design isn’t available now.

**shoe** saw your pic on FB, you look fabulous!

**red** that must have been very disturbing, glad you’re all safe and I hope you managed to get some sleep afterwards.

Absolutely nothing exciting to tell you today - we had such a lazy day yesterday, just mooched around the house, watched films, drank tea and looked after cats. I have no plans for today either, since I’ve got nowhere I need to be. There are things outside that I could do, but I Don Twanna, so I won’t!

Blossom and Cherry are snoozing, and Muffin has been alternating between her blankie and then coming over to rub herself around my legs, wanting some fuss and purring at me. Then she decided fuss time was over, and bit my fingers instead. Now she’s back with the rubbing and purring so I expect more biting to come next.

Morning.
Sounds very much not fun **Red**! Glad it was no worse. Around here the local youf were setting off fireworks into the small hours last night, so I was half expecting something to be set alight, but so far as I know the fireworks were the extent of the chaos. There have been incidents in previous years… The tiny pointy-nosed cats were all nervous and didn’t want to come out to play, which I assume was due to the bangs.

No children attempted to mug me for chocolate; I only bought one bag of something I like anyway, so I’ll cope.

Tis sunny, calm and surprisingly warm in the sun today, so I shall probably spend a couple of hours playing in the garden. The laundry is out, but as there’s no wind it probably ain’t gonna dry much. I also need to nip to the shops later, but that doesn’t need to be in daylight.

Wow! You said that quilt is 9’X9’? What are your plans for it when it’s done?

We still have 2 more clocks to set… or 3? Plus my car and the truck - I think **FCD** ’s car resets itself.

The day started around 44 Ferrets I think - it may have been chillier before I made my way out of bed, what with the time change and all. I don’t know at what point the sun starts to have an effect.

Today is dishwasher cleaning day - once I empty it of clean dishes, I’ll run a cycle with the cleaner tablet. Not sure what else I might do. As if it matters. 😉

No kids at the door, but we knew that. I did candy the first year and I don’t think a dozen kids showed up. So from then on, we kept lights out and blinds closed. Plus, frankly, this isn’t a good door-to-door neighborhood. Houses are widely spaced and set way back from the road. When I walked Otis the other day, I don’t recall seeing any decorations.

OK, I’ll finish reading then hit the shower. Happy Sunday and Happy November!

I had made an Asian dish that required seared beef slices and that included soy sauce and honey, which really stuck to the bottom. I was able to get all of the char off using baking soda and Barkeeper’s Friend, but there was what looked like a bit of food still stuck to the bottom. It wouldn’t come off by scouring, so I made the mistake of using a metal implement to try to scrape it. It must have been a flaw in the enamel rather than a food bit, as a small piece of the enamel popped off.

Morning all. Woke at 6am to rain and since body/brain still thought of it as 7am, decided to get up and start the day. Have eaten a banana and a protein bar for breaking fast and will probably head out to procure the Sunday NY Times in a bit. Sunday Dinner will be at the Olive Garden and filling the gas tank will also be on the agenda sometime today. Other than walking the treadmills while watching tackleball at the gym, nothing of consequence is planned. Weather Underground says it’s 54 ferret heights outside and getting to 66F later, so wet and cool.

**Shoe** , I let the 6-year old soccer players ‘paint my beard’ last week and wasn’t aware of how often I touched it until I looked at my hands later… Are all the phones kept in a certain place or just grabbed one that looked like yours?

**Lily** , that was a lot of T-or-T’ers. I probably totaled 20-25 max.

**Nellie** , all clocked changed, either by hand or electronically.

**boofae** , had to look that up, had never seen that word before but I see it is a Flemish stew and if it tastes as good as it looks, it was a great dinner.

**doggio** , enjoy the day off.

And time to dress for outside, find an umbrella (I have a couple around the house) and go acquire my reading matter for the rest of the week. Y’all have a good Sunday.

Kinda both, mine had been on the break table earlier & I forgot that I’d already put it back in my purse when I got ready to leave.

Face-down, one plain black case looks a lot like any other .. like suitcases at the airport.

I’d been getting bored with it anyway - my last case featured cute succulents and a pretty color palette - so this is the excuse I need to justify buying myself a non-essential.

For the past couple of years, it has been dinner at 4:30 around here. Us old folks need a few hours to digest before going to bed, otherwise major acid reflux ensues. Dinner also has to be small and unchallenging for the same reason. I miss the days of having a proper dinner at 6:00.

We had no trick-or-treaters last night, same as usual. Our neighborhood just doesn’t have many (or any) kids.

My Halloween tradition is to watch the old classic horror movies, namely _Frankenstein_ and _Dracula_. This year I also watched _The Invisible Man_, which to my surprise I hadn’t seen before. I thought I had, but I guess I misremembered. I didn’t realize that Claude Rains didn’t really show up until the last minute of the film.

Hey, it’s November! It’s All Saints Day for those who are into saints. There’s a historical or hysterical reason behind ASD, and you can look it up, and I’ll spare you the TLDR. Too many days off for too many saints. Consolidate them into one day, and the rich landowners get more work out of the peasants. It was a clever trick by management. By accident, All Hallows Eve was created, with bushels of its own legends and superstitions. Boo, eek, and creaky noises.

Golly, that got out of hand. Sorry.

We had exactly two doorbell rings from trick-or-treaters, and one was a scheduled visit from a grand-nephew dressed as Woody from Toy Story. We live on a street that connects on both ends but isn’t the shorter way to get anywhere else. Last night somebody nearby was periodically setting off something that went BOOM. Fireworks on Hallowe’en? That’s a new wrinkle.

**Hippie,** that’s a gorgeous quilt!

Oh, yeah, time change day. A great steaming nuisance, IMO. My phone just went off to show me a weekly summary of phone time, another feature I never asked for.

Good morning.

It’s 40F, dark, and cloudy. The forecast calls for morning clouds, afternoon sun, and a high of 52F. I may be able to get out there and cut the grass!

**Bright Tree** , Death Chicken is a recipe I got from the Mumpers. It’s very simple.

Ingredients:

Bacon
Rice
Chicken Thighs
Condensed Cream of Chicken soup
Water
Salt
Pepper
Paprika
Oregano
Garlic Salt (or powder)
Nutmeg (do not forget!)
Dried Parsley

Line a 9x13 pan with six strips of regular bacon (not thick or hickory).

Cover the bacon with 1 cup of uncooked rice, spread evenly.

Season the chicken thighs with salt, pepper, and paprika, then place them on top of the rice. I use about eight boneless, skinless thighs and trim the residual fat.

Mix together one can of condensed cream of chicken soup and almost a full can of water (approximately one cup). Add some oregano, garlic salt or powder, and some nutmeg. The nutmeg is very important! Also add some dried parsley. Stir, then pour over the chicken and rice. Seal the pan with heavy-duty foil (or two layers of regular foil), and bake at 300F for two hours. Voila! Dinner is done.

I didn’t have dried parsley, and (to me), it doesn’t make or break the recipe. But the nutmeg is key.

**Hippie** , beautiful work on the quilt! I showed my husband the picture you posted on FB, and he said it was beautiful.

**Shoe,** great work on the makeup, and I’m glad you discovered you had the wrong phone.

**Red** , that just sounds like too much excitement. I’m glad no one was hurt, and you didn’t suffer any damage.

**Flyboy** , my husband always wants to eat early, too. I don’t get it. I would prefer dinner around six, but sometimes have to settle for five.

No ToT’ers here; the light was off. I didn’t really hear too many running around either. When I did hand out candy, some years were light, and some years we ran out in less than an hour and had to run out and get more.

You sure get your steps in, **Nellie!** I hope your laptop behaves itself.

My daughter sent kids of her, my son-in-law, and the kids dressed up for Halloween. My daughter and SiL dress up every year with the kids and take them out to trick-or-treat. They had great costumes again.

**Knot** , my iPad shows my time usage. I don’t think my phone does (it’s a OnePlus).

All my clocks change automatically. I, for one, am glad to be back on standard time, and I wish they would just keep us on standard time. It’s actually better for you because it follows the circadian rhythm.

Other than (hopefully) getting out to cut the grass and change the water for the birds, I don’t have much planned. I drained and brought in my new fountain yesterday. Since it’s projected to get down to near freezing overnight, I thought it best to bring it in. Now I’ll have to store it somewhere.

I guess I’d better get going.

You all take care now, please.

Wait, that was a real word? I assumed a kitty had walked onto the keyboard.

I will update my surprisingly warm to disturbingly warm in the sun; this is November and Scotland, I should not be comfortable sitting out in a t-shirt.

Dinner here cannot be before 5, normally it’s between 6 and 7. 5 pm dinner is only for the days when lunch seemed aaaaages ago and I’m all starving and can’t wait.

> By accident, All Hallows Eve was created, with bushels of its own legends and superstitions. Boo, eek, and creaky noises.

The Celtic Samhain (other spellings are available, it’s pronounced roughly ‘so - een’), was already around before All Saints Day- on the same day. Details are a little scanty for the early versions, but it seems it was a big feast and it was one of the days where the underworld was close, so spirits\[1\] were likely to cross over. People gave offerings to dead relatives\[2\] and to pacify any passing evil spirits. People celebrate a recreated version round here now cos there’s not much info about the original and the details probably varied a lot, but it features in some really old legends, where it’s mentioned like it’s something that would need no explanation, so it’s not just neo-Pagans being inventive.

It’s not quite clear how much was just nicked from the Celtic tradition and how much just popped up independently, cos frankly this time of year when everything’s apparently dying but often not really gives you some bleedin’ obvious symbolism.

* * *

1. not the whisky kind, that came later

2. live grumpy relatives at dinner are bad enough, _dead_ ones are a nightmare, best to keep them happy

> Dinner before six always seems early to me.

Of late, we eat between 4:30 and 5 most of the time. Unless we have a late, substantial lunch, in which case, we forage whenever. I hated when I was stationed in Sicily and restaurants weren’t open when I was hungry. Plus dining after 7 makes me feel too stuffed to go to sleep at a decent hour (which was around 9 since I had to be up at 6 for work.)

Anyway, I’ve been to the convenience center. Only one bag of trash but 3 bags plus some boxes for recycling. I took Otis just for the ride - he goes crazy when you say “car” - he’s a travelin’ man!

Time to find some recipes for **FCD** ’s b-day and some Turkey day sides. Off to search…

I had 2 trick or treaters. Candy will be going to the barn. I don’t want it. I watched Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1931 version with Frederick March, and boy howdy, was it creepy) and Young Frankenstein. I swear I know all the dialog to YF.

Jekyll was pronounced Gee kill in the movie. I say Jek ill. Tomayto tomahto.
