Up, caffeinating, breakfasted and fixing to do KP. When I walked Nelson this morning, the courtyard still smelled like smoke and the burnt out shells of the two vehicles involved were still sitting there. I feel for the folks having to deal with insurance and such with that.

I need to take out the trash and sweep floors. I may get ambitious enough to scrub the tub (not that it’s a mess, but I do try to give it a scrub every now and again). After that, RDOS.

Y’all have a great day!

Happy Sunday! It’s a cool and foggy morning here, which seems appropriate for the day after Halloween. I waffled on handing out candy this year since it’s a new-to-me neighborhood but decided I just didn’t feel like messing with it. Only a couple of neighbors kept their porch lights on and I never saw any little goblins when I looked outside, so I suspect this isn’t the happening place to be for candy.

The last two weeks at work have been very busy so I needed a chill weekend and haven’t done much other than a bunch of laundry. I did pop out early this morning to go to Sam’s for gas - that place gets to be a madhouse so I try to avoid it during busy times. But the gas savings more than pay for the membership.

**Hippie** that is a beautiful quilt! What do you usually do with your quilts once they’re done?

**Red** I hope things calm down over there and you don’t have a repeat of that anytime soon!

**Cookie** sorry to hear about the Le Creuset breaking (and also thanks for the info - I didn’t know that chipping enamel meant the cookware was no longer safe to use)

**Boo fae** I’m glad to hear that Muffin is finally getting more comfortable and coming out for pets. Poor thing just really has had a rough go trying to adjust.

**Nut** your posts are always so interesting!

One of the cats wants play time so off I go…

Good morning! Chloé had her bath yesterday, then **Mrs Magill** and I went to get our Covid and flu shots at the Publix. After mine, I walked up to the Great Clips and unshaggified myself. While I was there, **Mrs Magill** picked up some smoothies for lunch. I called in my pre-order to Costco for a pizza.\[1\] We hung out and read for a while, then, after **Squeaky** went to work, we went to the Andy’s for ice cream and Chloé’s good puppy for taking a bath pup-cup. We then swung by the Costco to get our pizza. That place was a zoo.

We got home, and because we’re both reprobates who’d ruined our dinner by having a late afternoon ice-cream, we were not hungry, so I put the pizza in the oven on the “warm” setting.

Wr set up our table at the end of the driveway and brought the fire pit to the driveway. We handled out candy for the next couple of hours. We were approached by a freshman band parent who recognized **Mrs Magill** , \*The Band Lady."

**Squeaky** asked if he could go to a Halloween party after work, we told him that was fine, as long as he was home before eleven. He came home at ten, because when he pulled up the the party, it looked like it was a little more raucous than he felt comfortable with. We praised him for his good decision making.

Some time in the last twenty years, Halloween became synonymous with pizza night.

I managed to remember at about ten-thirty. **Mrs Magill** thought I was mad, because changing the clocks also means changing the batteries on the wall clocks, and I got them hung correctly on _the first try on both_!

**Hippie** That quilt is beautiful. I love the purples.

> The Celtic Samhain (other spellings are available, it’s pronounced roughly ‘so - een’), was already around before All Saints Day- on the same day. Details are a little scanty for the early versions, but it seems it was a big feast and it was one of the days where the underworld was close, so spirits were likely to cross over.

It’s a “mid-way” day. It’s mid-way between the equinox and the solstice. Like Candlemas, May Day, and the Dog Days.

“Gee-kill” would be the correct Scottish pronunciation of the name. The story is supposed to be set in London, but is really Edinburgh with the serial number filed off.

We had about twenty takers. We had expected more, since the weather was so nice, but we do live at the top of a very steep hill, so I can’t blame kids for not wanting to walk up it. Their loss, though. We were putting hands full in their bags.

1. We’re still used to having a lot more people in the house. If I’d thought about it, I’d have put it in to the Papa John’s. We now have pizza for days.

I was in that club for a few years, too – but a kid pushed me off a slide in second grade and I broke both wrists. When I went to my high school 50-year reunion a few years ago, one of the ladies stopped to read my nametag and I said “You probably won’t remember me.” Her answer was “_You_ broke both arms in second grade.” Seems she sat right behind me in class.

Happy November! 🍂

I got home at a little after 8pm yesterday. Seeing some kids still walking around did make me a little bummed to have missed my first trick-or-treating in the new 'hood, but WifeBFF and my “nephew” definitely needed my help yesterday…and HusbandBFF was glad to see me. There wasn’t much improvement yesterday, but this morning the PA finally heard some digestive sounds and he’s graduated to a liquid diet. 🤞

Meanwhile, WifeBFF hurt her foot last night and she and my nephew are currently at urgent care for an x-ray! As she said, “when it rains it pours.” ☹ She has no idea what she did: at one point she got out of bed, and when she planted her foot she felt a sharp pain. She iced it and wrapped it and hoped it would be better this morning, but no luck. Her oldest friend is arriving tomorrow, and will spend a week with them: as much as everyone wants HusbandBFF to be back home, spending _one_ more night in the hospital could actually be better for everyone (he gets professional care and she doesn’t push herself/their son doesn’t have to take care of both parents).

I’m feeling a little selfish at the moment: if she needs to stay off her foot her son will need to stay at the house with her, in which case they might ask me to go visit HusbandBFF today…and I don’t wanna. Happily his current hospital is closer to home than the one where he had surgery, but I’ve been helping them and/or my father since first thing Wednesday morning and even though I love everyone I really need a break. Not to mention that it’s going to be another busy and challenging week at work, plus I have the election on Tuesday (which will be at least a 15-hour day). Of course I would go if asked, but I’m sitting here hoping WifeBFF’s foot is somehow alright only mostly because I want her to be OK…but partly because I’m a terrible person. 🥺

I’m going to try to not worry about either of them for a little while – at least until WifeBFF tells me her x-ray results – and am about to go eat lunch and read for a bit. When she and I left the hospital yesterday we stopped at a restaurant to pick up dinner, and I have yummy leftovers that I’m looking forward to reheating.

> [@Filbert](#):
>
> I think they actually just made that one up

Well, yes and no: Google tells me that “Miss Wolcott’s Ghost” is a common misspelling of “Miss Willmott’s Ghost,” and the namesakes’ backstories/legends are nearly identical – though the character the plant is named after in the book is definitely fictional. 🙂

I’ve been to Costco with friends and I get its attraction (along with other bulk clubs like BJs, Sam’s, etc.), but a membership has never been worth it for this single gal. Can we just have a “Costco isn’t for me except for maybe a hotdog every now and then” table? 😁

Holy crap! I’m so glad no one was hurt and the building wasn’t damaged.

But that’s exactly what happened to my family 50 years ago, when a fire started in the apartment above ours (the occupant fell asleep while smoking). I was two months away from turning 5: one of my earliest memories is of hearing the pounding and yelling, then being on the sidewalk, and then being in an ambulance with my mom because I’d gone into shock.

It’s _from_ Scotland, you guys pinched it it from here! Of all the bloody cheek…

Locally it’s still often known under the older name of ‘guising’; kids would dress up and go house to house, then sing a song or tell a joke or something in exchange for a treat of some description. Some of my now former irk mates still insist on the joke or song.

I have seen a bunch of kids doing ‘penny for the guy’ exactly once in my life. I think that died out in about the '70s.

RDOS mode continues. I printed out the recipes I wanted. I also ordered and scheduled installation of the dishwasher we’ve giving Daughter and SIL for Christmas (OK, a bit early.) Their dishwasher is awful - the door won’t stay closed without major effort. And luckily for us, the one they chose is on sale, plus rebates for the appliance and installation. So yay!

And only the basement clock remains to be reset. I’ll do it when I go downstairs. Whenever. For now, it sounds like too much effort. Yanno, because RDOS.

Biscuits and gravy this morning, as is usual on Sunday. No real plans for dinner. Donated my Dutch oven to the dumpster this morning in anticipation of the new one arriving tomorrow.

In a major fuckup in prior planning, management arranged for the elevator contractor to shut down one of our elevators for repairs on election day. How stupid is this? Also, since our van is awaiting parts, anybody in a wheel chair is out of luck for a ride to the polling place. I hope they all voted by mail.

Ummm… Wrong. Caregivers have to take care of themselves, too. When **Mrs Magill** had her cancers, all the “how to care for your sick loved ones” books had at least one chapter dedicated to making sure _you’re_ okay, too. Too many people try to make caregivers feel bad fot including themselves in their priority list. Think of it like the oxygen mask on an airplane. You put yours on first before you help anyone else, otherwise you have two passed out people.

We went into town, Ms Peach got to visit with her friend Echo and they caused a ruckus in the office. She also got lots of pets from other coworkers. I’ve made a tradition of taking her into the museum on Sundays to visit with the boss’s pup.
Then went and voted. Then to the grocery sto. Now second load of laundry is sloshing. BLT ingested, waiting for the handegg I’m interested in to start in a couple of hours.

Have dined at the Olive Garden and am now at the gym doing penance. Rain has finally stopped but everything got nicely soaked so there is that. Filled my gas tank for less than $5 thanks to a ton of Kroger points and that should get me to somewhere on the road to Brother’s for Thanksgiving before the next fill. Checked the accounts and all is well finance-wise. That should take care of the major duties of the day.

Back on the treadmill for round 2–400 more calories to burn.

Oh, yeah, I forgot - I watched that one, too. The scenes where Hyde’s tormenting Ivy are especially painful to watch. And not because it’s a sick fantasy. That looks like a lot of the horribly abusive, and not uncommon, domestic relationships one reads about. The later version of this movie with Spencer Tracy and Ingrid Bergman is also good (and creepy), and the same scenes are just as disturbing.

Yeah, I blinked at that pronunciation of Jekyll, too.

> **Hippie** that is a beautiful quilt! What do you usually do with your quilts once they’re done?

This will be the third full size quilt I have finished, all three 9x9. Sunflower has two that size. We just rotate them on our bed. One of Her quilts is flannel front and back and double batted. When the winter is deep and the wind howls, that is warmth for the souls as well as the body.

My other finished quilt is 6’6" x 6’6". This is the one I keep in my den and roll up in if I need to sleep on the couch

The kitchen clock that needs new batteries is the only one that hasn’t been changed. I change the living room and bedroom clocks and skip the car clock entirely (I’ve been doing this long enough that I know what season I’m an hour off).

Chloe and MrsMagill are adorable, **mollie**.

Trash is out and I’m fixing to take Nelson on his afternoon constitutional. I’ll start chopping veggies for supper around 1530 (eggroll soup). I’ll play around in the studio until then.
