There was a Stokowski-like cartoon character that conducted the BandAmericard (pre-VISA) commercials: _Bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum…BankAmericard! Something, something, something, something…BankAmericard!_ Arrrgh, I wish I could remember the words! _Western Airlines…The Only Way to Fly!_ and (Pacific Southwest Airlines with their 🙂 airplanes. I remember a local jingle. But it wasn’t a local jingle. It was a jingle from hundreds of miles away. It was on the cable that carried three independent TV stations from Los Angeles. A coworker with cable reported the same feeling I had: this guy must have a horrible location. Over and over and over children’s voices chanted: - Pete Ellis Dodge Long Beach Freeway Firestone Exit Souuuth-gate.\* Repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat. 30 seconds are up? Okay. (singing fades) ---

Seeing this thread made me realize that the old ad jingles that have plagued me for the longest seem to have finally been expunged from my memory. Talkin’ really _old_, really _jingly_ old ad jingles, here-- the kind that rattle around in your head for _years_. Thanks to _The Mel Blanc_ show, for the longest time I couldn’t brush my teeth without a really inept “our product will enhance your sex life” jingle getting stuck: _Make your ------ ------ -------, ------ ------ ------- ----- — -------- —, Use Col - gate, Tooth Pow-der_. Similarly, I was haunted by another, courtesy of mmmm… Eve Arden as _Our Miss Brooks: Something, something something something, Lustre Cream Sham-Pooooooo!_ And now they’re gone! Whee! Of course, some smart-ass is bound to come along and fill in the blancs, condemning me to another ten years of suffering under the yoke of marketing for defunct products. (At least they’re defunct-- I compulsively buy Lux bar soap, thanks to Cecil B. DeMille – and in my heart of hearts I still think of it as _Lux Toilet Soap_, which is just _wrong_.) ---

Speaking of local (Philly) ones – a friend of mine’s father wrote the Melrose Diner jingle umpty-ump years ago. They did a 30-year promotion where a slew of people got together on the inside stairway at the Art Museum and sang it, and you can see my friend for about .2 seconds. ---
