Old cat or kitten?

Isn’t that the truth! I want them all, too. Nothing like kitties!

Indeed.

Er, I know about Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon, who is this this nixon fellow?

Ready when you are Franscesca

My cats were both grown when I got them: Austen was 6, and Lucia ~3. I never really considered getting a kitten when I went cat-shopping; I didn’t mind having a cat with a “past,” and their need seemed so much greater. Besides, kittens are cute, but they’re only darling little babies for a few months. After that, you’ve got a grown-up cat anyway.

In spite of being older cats, they aren’t all that staid. They run up and down the stairs all the time, chasing each other, and Austen will play catch if I throw a toy at her.

Both of them seem to have some abandonment issues after being tossed out by their previous people, and they like to stay close to me, but I think that’s sweet. I’m glad I could give them a home.

If it were me, I’d adopt an adult cat. One that’s already litterbox trained, and has a developed personality. Every time I see an ad in the paper for an adult cat that needs a home, I wish I could go adopt them all! I know they are less likely to find homes than all the cute little kittens. Sadly, my apartment building doesn’t allow pets. Or maybe that’s a good thing, because I could become Scary Cat Lady way too easily!

We adopted a kitten, when she was 3 months old. She was litter trained, and although hyperactive, she learned quite quickly to go play in the other part of the apartment at night, or to sleep when we were in bed. Actually, learned isnt quite it - she just did it all on her own. I love kittens, and seeing as this was the first cat that my SO and I had together, I think getting a kitten was the better choice. Although there was a one-year-old at the shelter that we considered getting, but somthing told us to take our Bree home. Looking at the cat hair around here (the other cat was a short-haired one), I’m begininng to wonder why :D! If we ever get a second cat (I’d love to, but I don’t know about my SO), I think I’d like a slightly older one, though.

I think you should take casdave’s cat…sounds like a perfect set-up! 5 months old is a good age, because they are still playful, but also beginning to settle down a little.

I have one of each. I raised Frieda from a baby, and I got Lenny a year ago at a shelter. Frieda grew up with me and adores me, but doesn’t really like anyone else. Lenny is a lover to all.

When I lost my last cat, some friends got me a certificate to adopt a cat for free from the APA. I hadn’t really wanted another cat, since I had Frieda already, but since I had the opportunity I thought I’d take the saddest looking kitty home. I couldn’t find any really sorry looking animals but there was one cat who wouldn’t look at me. He was sitting in his litter box with his butt to me and the lady at the shelter said that was his standard behavior. Guess the poor thing was scared, so I decided that he was unlikely to be adopted by someone else.

I brought him home and it took him a couple of months to come out of his shell, but now he is the friendliest, sweetest, most vocal cat I’ve known. He has a few odd quirks but he’s so damned cute that I can’t resist him. I guess I got lucky with him, but I plan to adopt sad little fraidy-cats from now on. I feel good that I was able to bring him out of his shell.

Kitty!
I can fit a kitten in my mouth. Hard to do with most adult cats.
