I’ve put a slab of ribs in the smoker and I just finished building a cuke-onion salad. Roxy is watching Blaze and the Monster Machines and Tobias is on my lap.

Good times!

I don’t understand Yahoo moderation.

There was a story about a train conductor who tore a passenger a new one for her racist outburst. Someone commented that the woman deserved it, the conductor was right, or something along those lines. (Lots of thumbs-up.) Someone replied to that comment, ‘are you a nee ghur? you sound like one’ [sic]. I couldn’t let that pass, so I reported the comment to Yahoo for hate speech. [NB: I didn’t reply to it.]

Yahoo rejected my report.

> Dear Roger Roundley, we have reviewed the comment you reported and found that it does not violate our community guidelines.

I don’t get it.

Minor annoyance with work. I’m building a thing for an event. The designer has measurements on this thing are juuust slightly wrong. Like if I took off 3/4 of an inch I could get multiple parts from one piece of lumber. No one would notice. But I’d prefer to run that by him before making changes. And he’s not answering his phone.

> If you and hubs like soup, there are tons of them that have sweet potatoes in them. I made [this one](https://theheartysoul.com/ginger-sweet-potato-and-coconut-milk-stew/?ssp_iabi=1677508839613) a couple of weeks ago and it was exquisite! Fortunately, if you have a dry, cool place to store them, sweet potatoes will last for a while

One of the change-of-pace recipes I make is curried mashed sweet pots. Prepare them just as you would ordinary white mashed potatoes. Then add a couple tablespoons of curry powder or similar spicing while mashing. Different and refreshing.

Once you think of them more as a carrier for spices or other ingredients, you can try all sorts of interesting combinations. I slice them thin, as if to make scalloped potatoes, steam, then serve with soy sauce. Simple and unexpected. Or make a succotash of diced mixed veg of whatever sort, but include diced sweet pots too. Best to dice them smaller than most of teh other veg and steam or sauté them awhile first before adding the other ingredients; like any starchy veg they cook much slower than do e.g. green beans or broccoli.

> I’m not a big fan of how Discourse shows links. I just looked at the recipe by clicking on the blue “this one” which now has a 1 next to it. Sometimes seeing the number is the only thing that makes me realize that it is a link.

That’s not exactly Discourse’s fault. Or at least not completely Discourse’s fault. If people want their cites to be noticed by others, they should not change the visible words of the cite to fit smoothly into the flow of the sentence. Instead make it stand out. Not this:

> [@missred](#):
>
> I made [this one](https://theheartysoul.com/ginger-sweet-potato-and-coconut-milk-stew/?ssp_iabi=1677508839613) a couple of weeks ago and it was exquisite!

Instead do this:

> A couple weeks ago I made this exquisite recipe: [Ginger Sweet Potato and Coconut Milk Stew with Lentils & Kale : The Hearty Soul](https://theheartysoul.com/ginger-sweet-potato-and-coconut-milk-stew/?ssp_iabi=1677508839613).

It’s actually _less_ effort to post the link my way than to tweak it to fit the sentence flow. Just structure your sentence to end in a colon, then press Ctrl-V to insert the link and its corresponding title. Done.

It’s a bit more effort to make it really stand out by using bold, underline, or both, but it isn’t difficult. Just start with \*\*[u] then the link, then [/u]\*\* at the end:

> A couple weeks ago I made this exquisite recipe: **[Ginger Sweet Potato and Coconut Milk Stew with Lentils & Kale : The Hearty Soul](https://theheartysoul.com/ginger-sweet-potato-and-coconut-milk-stew/?ssp_iabi=1677508839613)**.

I can’t say it better than this. Your job is easier than his, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. The fact he’s utterly trapped in his, and you have at least the theoretical opportunity to bail makes it all the harder to stay the course, no matter how much you want to. There may be more challenges ahead if / when he fades and becomes listless, while you need to double-down to make up the difference.

Strength. You have it, you may not quite realize it yet.

Rowwr! 😁

As to me here on late morning Thu …
After last night’s scoop-taco-tizer dinner a quiet-ish evening ensued. Kidlet went to bed with only two massive crying fits. Strange places will do that, so understandable. Good yaks until later then I too faded, as did Daughter. Leaving Her ladyship the supreme night owl alone as usual.

This morning Daughter & kidlet went to a fancy play event at a fancy park near us. It’s a bit more of a haul than it’s worth from their own home, but plenty close enough once they’re already here. Lunch upon their return, but after that there are no plans.

I got some dawn patrol balconating in before the Horde awoke and needed their respective tending.

I spent most of the day heaving in Secondary Sort. Minus: heaving 70lbs. electric lawnmowers on to belts above my head. Plus: fan. The fuzz had drug sniffing dog on the 200 boxline. I’ve never wanted to hug a police dog so much in my life(I had another “Darci returns home” dream last night). Plumbers are still working on leaks, so I may or may not have water the next two days.

I got a report correction request today. Big Multinational Credit Company had a **Subway restaurant** classified with SIC and NAICS codes as ‘Local Passenger Transportation’ and ‘Ambulance Services’. So I filled out the correction request form and researched and attached supporting documentation.

Still… A subway ambulance service is rather intriguing. Of course you’d need a TARDIS to put the pick-up end where it needs to be. (‘Why not just use the TARDIS to go to the hospital?’ Because it’s a _subway_ ambulance! Duh!) Then I started thinking about subway lines attached to every house, terminating at the hospital. It put me in mind of those [pneumatic telegraphs](https://www.messynessychic.com/2021/02/05/a-love-letter-to-the-lost-world-of-the-parisian-pneumatic-post/). And you know? There’s precedent. Maybe. I’d like some answers as to why he was completely incommunicado for so many weeks.

Ironically, my appntmnt. is in the city where he lives. (Yes, he drives a long way each time to visit.) But, since I don’t _knowwww_ where he _lives_ 🙄 I can’t exactly swing by.

So I’m just not gonna tell him where I had to be Friday morning - I did tell him I had the day off, but didn’t go into detail.

Yeah, not gonna happen. Not from me. You have my respect, sir.

I have the World’s Shortest Shift ™ today, go in at 4 (instead of 3) _AND_ I’m “early out” which means a decent chance of being sprung by 9 or 10, depending on how busy we are, which is always unpredictable. I kept double-checking my pic of the schedule! Can’t remember the last time I worked such a short shift.
This is my “not complaining” face:
🙂

Plus going in an hour later than usual means I’m already thoroughly sheveled and have nibbles in the nuker and have fussed over Monkey AND have time for both Zombies and cross-stitch.

Nice.

**Lily** , I’m glad to hear your wife is doing well post-surgery.

Took the kids to the purple playground which is mostly in the shade, but after 30-ish minutes, they were done. It’s mid-90s so ick. We’re at their house awaiting Daughter’s return. Once I get home, I’ll try to make a trash/recycling run.

Supper will be ribs, cuke salad, and 'maters.

Afternoon all. Gym workout is complete, and sweat-soaked shirt and gym shorts have been run through the dryer (not kidding, I really sweat hard there and 20 minutes in the sauna afterword doesn’t help…). Got 750 calories burned off, will try and take a walk tonight, weather permitting (30% chance of rain).

**shoe** , nice to have a 5-6 hour shift; hope the place doesn’t get blitzed and you have to stay longer. And Gentleman Caller either has a completely other life you’re not supposed to know about or he is a CIA/FBI/NSA (your pick) agent in deep cover.

I tried Hamburger Helper a couple of times, but it always ended up being too much food at once and I hate storing something I’ve started eating so…

> [@dogbutler](#):

Hmmmm, you should put out an execise video, bet people would pay good money to get in that good a shape…

**VanGo** , I sympathize. If you do the logical thing they’ll bitch and moan about how it’s ‘not what we wanted’. Hope he finally answered the phone.

**Flyboy** , sometimes good intentions crahs headlong into bureaucratic indifference. But good on ya for standing up for what is right.

**lily** , thanks for the suggestion. The brochure was from Viking River Cruises, which is usually the most expensive option anyway, so when the time comes I’ll be shopping around.

**Taters** , I’ve seen weather like that before, it’s perfectly clear where I am but right in front of me you can seen the bad stuff coming at you. Kinda eerie. Gald the driving and office visits went well.

OK, onward into the day.

I went to lunch at a popular cafe, with my sister and BIL. I must really have a shrinking stomach as I couldn’t eat all of the sandwich and dessert I ordered. And I’d only had a little toast for breakfast.

We had predicted storms last night but they went south. It’s still steamy and muggy outside today, and with the lunch I had I was very lazy when I got home.

**LSLGuy** , your idea for mashed sweet potatoes sounds great. I’m not great at mashing but I want to try that. I’ve been doing a lot of breads with herbs I;ve been growing too. One I’ve done I call Scarborough bread, because it has parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme.

On hold with a veterinary Rx place. We’re under heat and fire weather warnings tomorrow. I’ll be taking my lovely wife to the PT place, maybe (we’re waiting to hear whether they received the order). A friend is bringing Thai take-out over; I may make corn on the cob as well.

Kittypet J is sleeping off a morning spent squirting profusely from both ends, which also happened a couple of days after he had anesthesia for a blood draw as well. It’s been, oh, let’s say “interesting” to tend to him and my lovely wife simultaneously for several hours.

Awwwww! Buttons story got our housekeeper’s 12 year old bunny a couple of sweet potatoes. Bun-bun is funny, he loves watermelon and won’t even look at cantaloupe. Iceberg lettuce is totally unacceptable, but they have to be careful about giving him kale because he will gorge and then get an upset tummy.

I’m not a huge fan of cooked sweet potatoes, the texture is too close to cooked carrots, but hubs likes them and I still get a warm fuzzy when he says something is good instead of “OK”.

And I learned while wearing patent leather Mary Jane shoes and crinoline slips under my frilly dress and lacy apron. (It’s a wonder more kids back then didn’t set themselves on fire.)

That’s my worry too. Hubs says that it should probably be OK because the bowl will hold a couple of gallons of water. Oh well, if we don’t like it we have 30 days to return it.

> Expensive testing says cat is hyperthyroid. We’ll develop our treatment plan in a few days after my lovely wife is stabilized.

We have had several hyper-T cats. It is fairly easy to treat until it isn’t. I’m a big fan of using the gel that you rub into their skin, but if you have to go with pills, they are very small and don’t seem to have an off-putting taste or smell.

Hyper-T cats in this home go on the want food get food diet. At this stage of their lives, they are dying, so we stop worrying about them eating healthy. If they want fancy feast and crack tubes for the rest of their days…fancy feast and crack tubes it is. (If you would like some taurine food topper, I would be happy to send some to you. A lot of the cat snacks now don’t have enough taurine, so I like to supplement if I think kitty isn’t eating enough real food.)

> [@dogbutler](#):
>
> Both my parents worked, so I learned to cook off the Hamburger Helper box.

Do you remember the chicken helper commercials? The one with the little southern girl who proudly proclaimed “and Ah halped!” That was the commercial that made Mom force my baby sister to learn how to really cook. None of that fancy pants modern cooking in Mom’s kitchen, we are going to do it the hard and messy way and we were going to like it!!! Nowadays I thank Mom on a regular basis for taking the time to do that with us.

> [@scareyfaerie](#):
>
> Well, Shadow’s test results from the vet came back with thyroid issues so we’ll be starting him on some fancy expensive meds.

As I mentioned above, hyper-t cats are usually pretty easy to deal with. The main reason folks need to use commercial cat food nowadays is because raw food has taurine. The cooking process kills the taurine and if a cat is deprived of taurine for too long, it goes blind and then dies. If you are giving kitty a lot of things like poached chicken or deli turkey, you probably want to buy some taurine powder and mix it in kitty’s food.

When I was in Jr. High, they started allowing boys to take Home Ec as an elective. Us girls were outraged, we didn’t want no stinky boys in OUR kitchens, they needed to stay in the cafeteria impatiently awaiting us to parade in proudly carrying delicious food. We outgrew that by high school though, boys were certainly welcome to class so we could show off and teach.

That sounds pretty good, thank you.

Yes and no. A lot of the things I want to share just give a couple of lines of code, which doesn’t describe anything.

Ummmm…eagle sighting, brb.

Hi all. Evening here.

Lunch was most of the rest of the scoop-taco-tizers from last night. Then kid nap while Her Ladyship & Daughter did their bonding / reminiscing thing. I spent some time w y’all and some on the phone.

Dinner was a stroll (with stroller) to a local Poke outlet. I had a raw tuna bowl on brown Thai rice with a bunch of accessory spices & seeds & such. Worked fine glycemically by eating about half the rice, which was still a plenty big meal appetite-wise. We’ll be back.

Granddaughter is now alternating between being cooperative and distraught at the horrors of preparations for bedtime. Much horrific wailing for a couple minutes followed by a couple minutes of silence and a giggle. With luck she’ll fall asleep promptly in one of the calm interludes. Kidlets are great.

It was linked. (Thanks **JtC** for your reply).

Yay on the new keys **vroom**! I would actually like if if my apartment door had a fob like the car does.

_{{{cat glove and hubs}}}_\* Like **metal mouse** said, you have a lot on your plate right now. We have some big shoulders her in Mumperland.

Awww…Buttons sounded like a good bunbun **shoe**. Nelson likes pieces of raw sweet potato or carrot too. Weird little dog.

You’re a good wife and cat mom **lily**.

Finished up training the new guy at noon today and actually got some stuff accomplished before knocking off an hour early. I hightailed it home, took Nelson out, then went to the optical appointment at Wally World. After the exam (Doc says that I’m a couple of years out from cataract surgery on my left eye ☹ ), I picked out and was measured for my new glasses. I got two pair and it was still $100 less than my last pair (and they never fit right). I’m not a big fan of Walmart in general, but their vision centers tend to be outstanding, IME. I’m hoping that they come in before I leave for up north next Thursday.

Stay safe and healthy y’all!

Be careful what you wish for.

My apartment has a sort of hybrid fob. It’s a small hunk of black plastic like the head of a traditional housekey but ~3x thicker. Much smaller / slimmer than the head of a modern car key. IThat’s good. Plus it has a short straight shaft maybe an inch long where the toothy part of an ordinary mechanical key would be. The total result is like a thick plastic mailbox key. It’s small in your pocket which is nice.

Tap the fob head against the various sensors around the property to open the exterior or amenity doors, access the garage, use the elevator, etc. So far, so easy. Tap and go. _Tres Moderne_.

To get into your apartment, stick the plastic shaft in a circular keyhole in what looks like a deadbolt fitting above the door handle. Wait about 3 seconds. Then listen for an electric motor noise that runs for about a second as the lock rearranges its innards. Then after a brief delay a green LED illuminates above the keyhole. _Then_ turn the “key” 1/4 turn in the lock & hear the deadbolt retract. Now turn the key back to neutral and pull it out.

So exactly like sticking a mechanical key in a mechanical deadbolt keyhole like you’ve done your whole life. Except for the 4 seconds of waiting in three steps. Which is excruciating. Stick. Wait. Motor. Light. Turn. A lifetime of muscle memory is trying to hurry up but instead the Laa-Dee-Dah-Dee-Dah-Dee-Dah timewasting music is playing in your head.

Remarkably irritating for something so small. Locking of course has the same set of delays.
