Serious question; are you obsessed with diapers? Because many of your posts have been about them.
Goodness me, it’s conversation, much applying to thread topics that were retro in reflection.
We used cloth diapers (some with pins/rubber pants, but mostly with velcro diaper covers) until the kiddo was about 2 yo. We were lucky to find a daycare who would accommodate them. When he was 2 and went to preschool, they did not do cloth so we switched for when he was there.
We were both working parents and didn’t really find it all that hard to soak/wash the diapers every few days…especially once I added up how much money we were saving (even taking into consideration the extra loads of laundry/soap, water, etc).
This was in 1998-2000 or so.
I have three sisters who are 5 years, 10 years, and 12 years younger than me. The two youngest were born in the late '70s and early '80s. I was expected to babysit the two youngest ones, so I was obligated to learn how to change diapers.
My mother used cloth diapers, so that’s what I used. I remember being taught to lightly run each safety pin through the hair on my head before securing the diaper – the oil in one’s hair would made it much easier to get it through the cloth of the diaper. I remember being very careful to not stick the squirming baby with the safety pin , or you would hear about it!
Over the cloth diaper went plastic pants with little snaps.
This is what we did as well. My mom used laundry detergent along with 20 Mule Team Borax (and possibly vinegar as well?) in a top-loading washing machine with hot water when washing dirty diapers.
No clothesline…I’m pretty sure we used a clothes dryer.
Clean cloth diapers were also used as burp rags/spit cloths for the baby.
Nearly two decades later, when my son was born, my wife and I never even considered using cloth diapers. We used Pampers from the beginning and never looked back.
Also resurrecting numerous zombies to reminisce about the good old days when she exulted in changing diapers and hanging wash out to dry. Seriously, she should get a blog.
P.S. Not only did we use Pampers, but also used a Diaper Genie at home.
Do those still exist?
What’s wrong with posting on a message board?
My sentiment to a T.
Reminds me of an old Cathy comic strip, where Cathy’s friend Andrea had a baby and was all smug about using cloth diapers and Andrea’s husband comes out screaming, “Disposables, we’ll make a donation to Green Peace and switch immediately.”
With my son (early 80s), I used the pre-folded diapers, pins, and plastic pants because they were cheaper and better for the environment. That ended when he was nine months old and I’d accidentally stuck him with a pin for the third time. He was walking by then, and changing diapers was a battle, no matter how I tried to distract him. I switched to disposables, and we were both happier.
With my daughter, I was all set to go back to cloth diapers. There were now new-fangled diaper covers that closed with Velcro–no pins! But they used them at the hospital, and the edges abraded her little thighs. Also, I was working full-time by then and had my son to care for as well, and there was no diaper service in backcountry Wyoming. So I used disposables for her straight through.
I confess I’ve bought cloth diapers specifically to use as cleaning rags. Nothing better for washing mirrors or windows!
