I managed to talk mice elf into taking a walk today. Scattered clouds and 49F at the moment. I made it 16 blocks with my bursitis acting up towards the end. I’m seeing some green buds on some plants, so things should start bursting into life before too much longer.

My middle son would have been 49 years old today, so I’m a bit melancholy. He was bipolar and addicted to alcohol; there was nothing anyone could do. Seven years ago his body cried “enough!” and his liver failed him. Hospitals won’t do a transplant for anyone who hasn’t been sober for at least a year, so the choice was hospice care from which he would never recover, or let him go.

I thought I might have a uti ( I get a couple a year) so went and gave a sample.
Apparently not but they were nice enough to give me a scrip for antibiotics in case Im certain or I find out in office, which would cut the wait of the pharmacy.
I do have a dermatology appt Fri. My hair has been breaking off for 2 months and when I scratch a dry spot it sortof burns.
I also see a few pink dots on my abdomen so it will be good to find out whats wrong and fix it.
A job fair tomorrow, my last hope as I have 7 dollars in the bank.

He (the Archbishop) does have a fancy chair (called a “cathedra” whence “cathedral”). No one else is allowed to sit in it. So it is pretty literally the seat of the archdiocese.

I’ve never had nor seen vegemite before. This looks like it is a spread. That’s not at all what I’ve thought it is.

Well, the Dr’s office called and said that the vaccination that Hubs was scheduled for does not work well with steroids so they postponed the vaccination and said today’s appointment could be a video visit and we wouldn’t have to drive down to the office. The Dr. agreed to reduce the dosage on the steroid and sent the scrip to the local pharmacy. As I mentioned earlier, I had already called for the gout meds to be refilled at the Cancer Pavillion Pharmacy. So, I had to call them and cancel that refill then call the local pharmacy and ask them to fill it. We also asked the Dr if the meds for atrial fibrilation could be lowered and she said, not her area of expertise, we needed to message the heart Dr. So, I did. Hubs got a call saying he needs to go in for an appointment. We just saw the heart Dr. in the late fall. Cripes. So, I had Hubs call back and say that if it could be a video visit by 3/31 (since Medicare is scheduled to not pay for video visits after that date thanks to the South African nepo baby) or an in-person visit on the same day that Hubs is scheduled to go in to see the Stem Cell Transplant Dr, 4/8, that would be do-able. Instead he was told that no appointments were available until June. I told him to tell them to Bite Me.

On the good news front, Daughter called the dealership and asked if the price of the car could be reduced. Salesman said $300. She said “if you make it $500, I’ll say yes right now.” He said “I have to talk to the manager”. Well, you know it’s just a negotiation game and the amount he said at first was not the best and final amount that the price could be reduced. So, he called back and said OK. Now she’s having an issue getting ahold of her insurance agent. Hopefully that happens soon.

[Vegemite at the Australian Food Shop](https://theaustralianfoodshop.com/product-category/pantry/spreads/vegemite/)

It’s a concentrated yeast extract (from used brewer’s yeast). Very salty. ‘Yeast Extract (from Yeast Grown On Barley And Wheat), Salt, Mineral Salt (508), Malt Extract (from Barley), Colour (150c), Flavours, Niacin, Thiamine, Riboflavin, Folate.’

In the '80s I worked with a guy who had been a missionary in Papua New Guinea, and he introduced me to it. Been eating it ever since. I’ve only met a couple of other Americans who like it.

The roofer came by today. We had him put a new roof on the house a couple of years ago (maybe almost three?). This Winter we had a leak inside the house; right up against the back wall. We think that ice built up in the gutter (the catio roof is not attached to the house, and ‘floats’ about three feet above the house roof) and caused water to back up under the shingles. Mrs. L.A. thinks we need torchdown. The roofer says we don’t. He’s going to pull up the lower portion of the roof and see what’s going on, check the vents, and replace the roof he pulls up. He said there will be no charge, because he ‘is responsible for [his] work.’

The 17’ x 24’ catio roof is leaking. Fortunately, not where we sit; mostly toward the lower end. The roofer says he can replace the catio roof, including five or six sheets of OSB, for $2,700.

**FCD** had a hankerin’ for a Cracker Barrel breakfast, so we supped there. On the drive home, he was telling me about a story he heard on the radio about getting a private pilot’s license. They estimate it costs about $50K!!! _YOIKS!!!_

I had to do a little computatin’ - when I was taking flying lessons at the Navy flying club, the Cessna 150 cost $11/hour and the instructor was $8/hr. I amassed more than the usual amount of hours because I had all kinds of problems learning to land. (Turns out, I needed to be sitting on a cushion. Once I was about 2" higher, landings were a piece of cake!)

Anyway, by my very rough calculations based on a 50-year-old memory (I soloed on 7 Nov 1974) I figure getting my license and instrument rating cost $2500-$3000. I was within about 4 hours of having what I needed for my commercial ticket when I quit flying. It was supposed to be temporary, but I never did go back. Anyway, the report also said getting a commercial license costs close to $100K!

Using an inflation website, $3k in 1975 comes to just under $18K today - so why is flying so much more expensive now? My guess - fuel costs, instructor costs, insurance, and at a non-navy flying club, there’s lots of overhead. But dang! I guess it’s a good thing I never went back to it. Instead, all our money goes into a hole in the water. 🤣

I got a bit of a workout today. Not only did I do a lot of raking as well as lifting all the raked leaves into my cart, I made 11 round trips to dump the leaves, and one way was at least 100’. So that’s 2200’ at a minimum, plus 2 more trips from the shop into the woods - easily another 150’ there, plus getting the stuff out of the shed and putting it all back in the shed. I figure I did half a mile just in my yard! Mostly pushing a cart! I think that qualifies as at least 30 minutes of cardio when you add in the raking. I only say that because my cardiologist wants me to get at least 30 minutes several times a week. So no need to bike tonight!

And I should sleep well tonight!

I’m here with a poodle on my lap - shocking, I know! I’ve just eaten a small bit of dinner and now the smell of leftover honey mustard is more pungent than I’d care to smell, but I’m too lazy to get up and remove the plate.

I’m working my way through a qualification exam to work on some AI stuff. I took the practice exam and had to retake it to pass. Hopefully something useful rubbed off on me in the meantime.

Things are beginning to settle down at irk. I’m thinking that the bad neighbor supe was told to play nice or sumpin’ because all of her people have been told to keep their mitts off our racks, peripherals, etc. 🙂

On the irk front, I’m dusting off the resume for an inventory research specialist position in my department on second shift. It would be a lateral move, but one that would offer more opportunities to move up. Given my background, I should have a pretty good shot at it.

Eventide here now.

I survived my surgery. The actual snipping & sewing was a 5 minute job. So far so ordinary. Acetaminophen is handling the discomfort after the lidocaine local wore off.

Other than that I washed the sheets & towels the housekeepers changed, did minor erranding, got the car washed, had a short late nap, and had taco Tuesday w suitable margaritas. In other words, RDOS normal.

Might have early bedtime, might be up late. Kinda low on sleep for the week right now & tomorrow might benefit from being fully charged.

On this day in 1655 a Dutch guy with too many vowels in his name discovered Titan. I used to know what his name was, all I can remember is the too many vowels part.

A quick check says it was Christiaan Huygens. I probably didn’t like his name because he used a “y” as a vowel, I don’t remember anymore. But anyhow, Titan is big enough that a very dedicated guy with a homemade telescope was able to find it.

>
> IOW potatoes cooked and served with intact skins = jackets.

Oh, please, they are Brits. It is much more complicated than that, it has to be. Those folks don’t even use a microwave to heat their water for tea!

## 3 Tips When Making English Jacket Potatoes

1. **Slice them first.** Like most Americans, I typically poke holes all over the potatoes before baking them to ensure they don’t explode in the oven. But Jo suggests [slicing a cross shape](https://www.amazon.com/Mercer-Culinary-Genesis-Forged-Paring/dp/B000IBVD0W?asc_campaign=KT-22943799&asc_refurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thekitchn.com%2Fjacket-potato-22943799&asc_source=search.yahoo.com&tag=kitchn-20) about 1/4-inch thick into each potato. This helps them release some steam, makes the interior more fluffy, and also makes them easier to slice into when they’re piping hot.
2. **Bake them for longer than you think.** Many recipesrecommend baking potatoes for an hour at 425°F. Instead, Jo suggests baking potatoes at 400°F for closer to two hours. The potatoes won’t burn at this temperature and the _long_ bake means the skin will be so crisp that it’s practically cracker-like.
3. **Return them to the oven.** After the two hours are up, remove the potatoes and carefully cut _deeper_ into the slices you made initially. Then put the potatoes _back_ in the oven for 10 more minutes. This helps to dry out the flesh further and makes it extra fluffy.

>
> So, yeah, they cleaned up all the mess just for fun, literally. And I tripped and _almost_ fell on my face coming back in the front door. Thank goodness that didn’t happen.

What nice neighbors. I’m glad you didn’t trip, that wouldn’t have been great, you also have stuff that needs to get done!

I’d have no problem in being in a war _with_ them. It’s being in a war _against_ them that would suck lots.

So very right, thank you for the correction. Last time they got mad at us, they set the White House on fire. (yeah, I know they really didn’t. Maybe.)

A month ago, when it was windchill of 20 below I was out there marching. Now I have a newborn grandbaby and a daughter with healing to support, so this will be in spirit. In Saturdays to come I’ll be back on the protest line, especially if it’s closer than 65 miles.

On to the barricades all!!

Such a GORGEOUS day, and I hardly got time to enjoy it. That’s OK, though, as tomorrow is also slated to be glorious, and Mr. Max, the little sweetie, will want lots of walksies. I was helping my friend carry boxes to her car (I save them for her etsy business.) when we saw Mr. Max and his person. She was sitting on the sidewalk because she’d fallen and couldn’t get back up, poor thing. We helped her up, and then I walked her home to make sure she got there OK. Mr. Max tried to lick me to death, but I survived. 🙂

I looked it up back when Men a Work sang 🎵 _He just smiled and gave me a Vegemite sandwich."_ I’ve never had it, though. It sounds interesting. Do people enjoy it other ways besides spreading it on bread?

I shan’t respond, but here’s an actual photo of my face: 😡

Right on!

🎵 Well done, sister suffragette! OK, wrong cause, wrong era, but right spirit!

You don’t work on Saturdays? I’ll wave to the southeast if you march. Heck, I’ll do it if you’re working on the 100 slides. (Did I say that right?)

We should all carry one of those car pool dummies, so it looks like there are twice as many of us. 🙂 Or else it’d look like half of us are drunk…

Glad the surgery went well, **pilot**. It sounds like you got a lot done, too!

It cancels out all those consonant-crazy Czechs. 🙂

I think this is why I had trouble parking in my last car: I couldn’t see the stripes because the car was so low. My mom had to sit on a cushion AND have one behind her–one reason she hated being 4’9. I wonder how many cushions she’d have needed to fly a plane. How tall are you, if you don’t mind my asking.

Absolutely!
