Mornin’ all - Noon really here now. And alternating between bright sunny, raining, and drizzling. Drizzling just now.

My clever attempt to get the early dermo appointment sorta worked and sorta didn’t. The first appointment is 0730, and mine was at 0830. So close to first. They sent out a text just before I got there that they had 2 of 4 nurses out for personal reasons so the day would be running late. That basically halves the throughput of the clinic. A clinic that normally runs on the tick most of the time.

I did get seen at 0900 and was out at 0930. So late, but not gross. The workers were still chipper enough, but you could tell they were resigned to bailing the ocean with a teaspoon all day.

Then I went outside into the bright sunshine and freshly wetted parking lot. To find that the moron who’d parked next to me had crunched my car and driven off. The evidence suggests that as the person on my right had been backing out of the space they’d cranked their steering right to swing their rear to the right which brought their left front corner into proximity with my right rear corner. But instead of missing, they collided and scraped the shit out of my rear quarter panel & bumper.

It was handy I happened to go around the backside of my car to use the trunk and thereby notice the fresh evidence. Had I just walked up from the front and driven off I’d have been mystified later whenever I would’ve eventually noticed the damage. I know it happened right there by the little pile of destroyed plastic off my car laying right beneath the scene of the crime.

Bastard. The hassle of this far outweighs the cost. And no, there aren’t surveillance cameras. The adjacent space was empty when I parked and when I came out was occupied by an undamaged car of a different color than the paint scraped onto mine.

Other than that I got 2 shiny new biopsies, a thumbs up about the healing status of my recent surgery, and a fresh spraying of the unusually persistent plantar wart. We’re both pretty sure this’ll by the final kill shot for that damned thing.

I’d like to take the car to the body shop for at least an evaluation, but that’s a PITA while it’s raining. Good news is there’s no functional damage and as infuriated as I am, the cosmetic consequences aren’t _that_ bad. It’ll be an expensive fix, but meanwhile it doesn’t look too redneck / hoosier / POWM to the casual observer.

At least my breakfast before the doc was nice and just the way everyone hopes their breakfast will be: yummy, blood-free, and crash-free. Unlike my doc visit.

**FCM** : Congrats for good and clean teeth. Good luck getting **FCD** to the vet today. Do I sense avoidance or do I just have an unhealthily suspicious mind?

**Taters** : Ouch for the cold / flu / whatever. Get well soon! Double ouch for the pay/retirement admin mess!! Here’s hoping that slides into place soon for you.

**Cookie** : I’m sorry about your apple cancellation, but more for what it suggests about your wife’s health and vigor. There’s been a worrisome amount of cancelling [whatever] lately. Manly {{hugs}} 🫂.

**JtC** : For me the highlights of the horseradish festival are the

- Root toss (like ring toss with foot-long hunks of horseradish), and
- Root golf (chipping & putting ~100 feet with a hunk of root about the size of a billiard ball that tends to break apart with each stroke so you play an ever smaller hunk. If it falls apart all the way to an unhittable chiplet before you hole the putt, you’re disqualified. Lotta strategy in how hard to hit it, and whether to play the biggest surviving piece or the one closest to the pin. 🤪
- Crowning of the Horseradish Queen from the local high school.
- The giant ketchup bottle.

The lowlights IMO are

- Horseradish wine
- Horseradish ice cream

I think those abominations need no elaboration.

**flyboy** : IT may be slow on the uptake, but they seem to get you going again pretty reliably. Between your sis and your SIL, it’s a darn good thing you two are around to rescue their bacon out of the fire. Also a good thing you two get along well enough to keep performing these miracles for your sibs wo fussing from your spouses.

All:
Tabasco is yet another abomination. It’s what 1940s & 1950s terminally whitebread Caucasian people thought of as hot sauce. An inedible combination of strong vinegar, bad secondary flavors, and little heat. Ugh.

Procrasinaty spouses who promise to do [whatever] but won’t are the pits. Double demerits if they get pissy when you do it. I didn’t do much of the former and never got pissy about her doing it, nor have I suffered much of that from wives. But as a routine habit, boy would that piss me right off.

I admire all you ladies’ fortitude in not strangling the old coot while he’s snoring.

Food stamp interviews are still happening, the states pay for that. Of course, the wait times on the phone are insane and back when I was doing them, 6 hours in the waiting room was pretty normal.

Most of the states also had the money to pay October’s food stamps despite the lack of federal funds. November is going to hurt a bunch of needy families if nothing changes.

Agreed.

Dang, what a PITA, and I’m glad you are healing well.

The highlights sound hysterical and I agree that the lowlights are really low.

Instead of going to the library, I went out back with the vice grips and moved the dish looking part straight up in the air. Then I came back inside to find the cordless drill which of course needed to be put on the charger. When Hubs noticed and asked what I was doing, I told him that I was going to drill holes in the bottom of the bowl and make it into a planter.

He was right about it being a simple job, it took him no time at all to pull the dish off the pole and put it out for the bin man (or any passing metal scrappers) to take.

No avoidance - just unplanned stuff. He made it home in plenty of time and we just got back from the vet. Other than being a tad underweight, Otis is great. And the skinny is likely related to his being a stray, then being moved thither and yon and finally to our house. I talked to the vet about food and feeding, so we’re all set there. All in all, a good visit.

Now I’m off to surf for Large Breed Puppy Food - Otis apparently doesn’t like the stuff I bought, so I need to find some other brands to try out. It’ll likely have to be ordered because apart from the Purina One, I didn’t see and Large Breed food in local stores. Dammit.

So, let the search begin!!

I was in the Mez today(and will be all week, apparently). One of the highlights was the 38 cubes that got miss sent, because _somebody_’s shipping department typed “27699”(State of NC’s Mailing Center zip) instead of “27560”(RDU airport zip). Easy mistake to make. 🤨 Then there was the other one. The original address label read:
“Don’t go down to sisters
Behind the red barn
white trailer
leave on porch”
Which is not a deliverable address. It had been update to an actual 20th Century style address, but that didn’t show up in the package system.
Me: \< Googles address to see if real \>
\< sees nothing on Google Maps \>
\< clicks Zillow link, sees sat pic instead of streetside view \>
😮
_Oh god, I can hear banjos_
So I left that for dispatch to put in, if they want to add an address that is just a barn and trailer in a clearing, with a dirt path to the actual road. The sort close down was hectic, because of the brand new RFID printers was already pinin’ for the fjords, so we had one computer for the 300 slide, and the exception progran for the 200 Slide computer got erased. The damaged included the obligatory smashed Home Depot box of Italian porcelain tiles, no less that three smashed toilets, and a smashed glass storm door. The last four were all from the same place, so I assume [this guy](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5sEIWlQO7A) was one of the loaders. I stopped at Teeter for an onion ~~for my belt~~ , and some salsa, and then got Spot a bag of dry, flavorless bits. I had chicken tacos with the salsa for lunch, and now it’s naptime.

That’s not a proper Haiku, but shows promise.

I probably mentioned it years ago, but I did a stint as a Christmas temp and ye gods the things some people will stick on an envelope and expect it to be delivered are impressive. Literally saw envelopes with, say, ‘Barbara and John’ as the sole address. Sometimes there’d be a street name, like ‘High Street’.

If it was my address it may actually stand a chance, as it happens to be the only street of that name, but still…

The rats are starting to be interested in making friends, I think. Climbing onto fingers and sniffing (and not biting today, hooray!). It’s proving tricky though; the cage is in a room which it 100% not in any way rat proofable. It’s full of stuff, plants and exciting places to vanish and never reappear from. Even the carpet isn’t currently attached to the floor. Taking them out to get them used to handling is going to be complicated…

Well, I’ve bought a car.

Or at least put a non-refundable down payment on one; the vehicle is sitting in a port in S. Carolina so it may get here next week or next month. Not perfectly equipped, but near enough and it was in the style and color I wanted. Cost was…within budget, but still is a nice chunk of change (which I had put away years ago for this time).

Oh, it’s a 2026 Hyundai Palisade SUV Hybrid, Blue Pearl w/Grey interior, SEL Premium version.

All that running about (visited a couple of dealers to see what they had or were going to have) gave me an appetite so stopped at **Swampy’s** favorite hog trough and consumed way too many calories, so will try to work some gym time into the day or evening.

So that took care of things before 3pm…and as for the rest of you..

**Taters** , ope you get feeling better soon. And hope your finances don’t suffer because of the shutdown…I got my Civil Service check direct deposited on-time this month.

**Flyboy** , hope the computer issues get sorted out and yay! for wifey helping out in a time of need.

And just had a quick rainstorm as I typed this, so going out to exercise just got a little more problematic. So guess I will work on my belly development today rather than any of the machines…

Something really strange happened to me on Sunday. I was talking to my sister and we sequed into speaking of the death of our father eleven years ago.

I have always been angry because it was a distracted driver and nothing happened to him. To my shock my sister said that yes, we did sue his insurance and to a chunk of change. The way I remember is mom didn’t want to go through the pain of legal action. My sister told me about the meetings we had with the lawyer that I have absolutely no recollection of. It’s like an alternate timeline in my head.

How could I blank out like that?

And that was before covid. I still keep in touch with a few of my ex-coworkers and they said it is worse now. So, if she can’t get through on the phone she is probably blaming that on the shut-down because she doesn’t know any different. What state? I can ask around for more details if you want. I could maybe find tips for her to get her case looked at, possibly.

Grins proudly. I even primed the pump so to speak. We share an ISP address so both of us get focused ads for each other. I spent some time looking at vines, ivy and hanging plants so he already knew I was thinking plant thoughts again.

Honestly, I was surprised at the dish bolts when I actually got out there. They weren’t rusted and didn’t take much oomph to get turned. I could have taken it off myself, where’s the fun in that?

I think Taters has experience with that, maybe you can share big dog feeding tips 🙂

That sounds likely. Mrs. L.A. is pretty private, so I’m sure she would not appreciate me mentioning her (as I do often) or her relatives here. But the cousin lives in Arizona.

People dump unpleasant memories all the time. As well, if Mom & sis did the heavy lifting on the lawsuit and you were mostly a spectator, you had lots of other things to think about at that time. besides, something like that is largely done by the insurers, not the family. SO may not loom all that large at the time, much less now.

No shame in that at all.

> [@The\_Stainless\_Steel\_Rat](#):
>
> And sorry for the car getting crunched, I concur with your opinion of the perpetrator.

Thanks all. Had the body shop look at it. We might get off easy and not have to replace the big plastic wraparound one piece rear bumper. The bastard put one bad kink in it, but if we can grind and fill that back to the original smooth curve we avoid buying a $2K part, then painting the whole thing, and the total cost of repair comes waay down. Next is the decision about whether to involve my insurance co or just involve Visa.

I already know that answer. They are still taking applications and the state will fund food stamps for November.

I would suggest that she do her application online and then get up early and get to the food stamp office as soon as they open. She needs to bring water, snacks and a book. She also needs to bring proof of income, rent and one utility bill.

She’s also going to need a letter from the Mrs. explaining that the money sent was a one time loan and that she expects to be paid back. The letter needs to be signed, dated and have her phone number.

Gift money is countable income and will go against her benefits for the month she received it. Loans are not countable because there is the expectation that they will be repaid.

Or that’s how it was 6 years ago. I understand they are counting reverse mortgages as income now and they used to be considered non-countable.

I highly recommend _[chewy.com](http://chewy.com)_. Excellent, responsive customer service in unlikely instance that something goes wrong. Cheerful, you can always talk to humans and very eager to please.

They are also pretty knowledgeable and happy to make suggestions of what they hear works. I bet they’d put together a sampler pack of large breed puppy foods in small bags that are best sellers and have it on your doorstep \*tout suite’. Very no fuss and generous return policies and good deals, sales and coupons. If they accidentally send a double shipment or the wrong thing, they don’t expect you to return it, they say just use it or donate it to a rescue or shelter.

Howdy Y’all! Laundry got laundered and put where it stays until it gets dirty again. We had a taco lunch instead of sup, so fartfest was over before Zoom time. The meetin’ was not too awful. The few folks who asked questions actually had intelligent questions. It was over at seven-fifteen so I count that as a win.

**Taters** hope you’re feelin’ better today.

**Pilot** grr about the smashed vehicle. Sounds like the fix might not be too bad.

**MetalMouse** conga rats on the new ride.

**CupCakes** it’s not too uncommon to blank on really bad stuff. I am glad to know there was some monetary compensation even though it won’t replace the loss of your dad.

Agree on both points and that blue is very pretty.

The more I evaluate what happened, it seems clear the other car just barely brushed mine. If the driver was less than fully attentive and/or they were driving a big beast they may not have known they hit me. So less Bastard and more Idjit.

It is astonishing how much it costs to fix teeny little oopsies.

I ought to get the fixin’ started tomorrow so I’ll know more then.

Food. Lots and lots of food. All of which re-emerges soon, only slightly rearranged. Over and over.

How hard can it be? 😁

Had Taco Tuesday and am now enjoying the just past full moon playing with the clouds. It finally eased up on the intermittent rain at around 7pm and we may be dry overnight. Here’s hoping.

We love chewy. They bring the heavy bags of litter right to our door and the satisfaction guarantee works. Sometimes our auto order can’t be filled because they are missing something and they give us a 10% off coupon for the next order.

So I called Mom tonight. We talked about the seminar we went to a few years ago. She doesn’t remember much anymore so I can always entertain her with the same old stories as long as I lead with “I’m sure you don’t remember this, because you didn’t notice it at the time”. Tonight’s story was about her using the wrong fork at the banquet and the waiter being silently outraged.

It was a fancy dinner, nice clothes, water goblets with lemon slices and linen napkins. Mom used her dessert fork for her salad and then was chatting with someone when the waiter arrived to clear the plates for the next course. He looked at her plate and his eyes widened with outrage, then he took the offending fork off her plate, put it firmly back on her napkin in the proper place and put her salad folk on her plate and made off with it.

Four of us caught it and just started dying of laughter, she didn’t because she was paying attention to her conversation.

I did tell her about it that same night, but that memory didn’t stick. I guess that’s a good thing because I can get her howling with laughter every few months.
