Hospice nurse just left - she also tried to impress on MIL the importance of her not being alone, especially for long periods, as wella s using her walker. All we hear is “I used to…” and I finally said “You never used to be 93.” I also mentioned her BIL who went headfirst into a kitchen cabinet door and totally trashed it, giving himself multiple bruises in the effort. I doubt we made an impression. I got my 3 items done, and I’ve got a fourth - cancelling her prescription insurance, since hospice pays for it all. That, alas, requires a phone call because I refuse to create an account just to cancel it. Then I need to find the patterns and fabric for our weather cloths. I moved them when we set up the guest room for MIL, and for the life of me, I don’t remember where I put them. Dammit. But the house isn’t that big so it should be that hard to find, right?? ---

The photos I saw on the Tesla website made it look rather sedan-ish. Speaking of automotive matters, today involves a run to Fremont (about 73 miles from here), where we have a vehicle for DH (2020 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk) on hold for test-drive. Unless there’s a problem on the test drive, it’s nearly certain we’ll buy it today. So far, dealing with CarMax has been straightforward and pleasant, but we’ll see what in-person is like. We’ve reached a point where things like me finding a job really do need me to have better flexibility on locations and schedules than relying on public transit really allows, thus a chunk of a recent windfall will go to investing in a second vehicle to allow that flexibility. I’m taking over the current car (2016 Dodge Dart) for my needs, since a fairly compact sedan meets my needs just fine, while DH needs something more rugged with better ground clearance and more cargo space to suit an electrician’s commute/worksite needs. ---

So in addition to Monday usually being shorthanded, they were sending people home early. 🤔 With predictable results. But I did my part, and otherwise it’s not my circus and not my monkeys. But I’ve had my dry, flavorless bits, a cool shower(it was 86 degrees out when I got off at 0900), now it’s naptime. Assuming a certain tuxedo-ed critter doesn’t lick me awake. The only thing I really put off is paying car taxes. Good morning. I had a talk with the farther away job today. I am still considering it. I figure I will talk with my therapist about it tomorrow and see what she thinks. Otherwise today Annie and I are just hanging out in the kitchen. I’m preparing for another round of work and she’s studiously ignoring the piece of cheese that I put in front of her. Some days she likes string cheese and others she doesn’t. ---

Last time we had it done was at least 15 years ago. Many things have changed since then, such as some relations falling out of favor. We also need an executor who has power of attorney and who knows where everything is. Additionally there is all this “stuff” that needs to be pared down drastically. Trouble is: nobody wants much of it. These are things that wake me up at night. ---

So very many people did come to her with documents grossly out of date. You’ve got plenty of company in that space. However hard dealing with your elder’s passing will be, it’ll be made far harder if their paperwork was/is a mess. Don’t do that to your downline; it isn’t nice. Lest I sound too preachy from my pulpit, I’ll admit that right now if I kick it today, HL will receive a very nice windfall. Like all of it. Figuring out who to substitute into that slot when I have no downline and little sideline will be an exercise in dart throwing. I’ll also throw out a plea to get a trust if you don’t have one even if you don’t have much money. Think hard about “What if I’m dead?” But think a bunch harder about “What if I’m mentally incapacitated?” Being dead is really pretty easy for the dead person; not a care in the world. Conversely, being alive but unable to make your own decisions and care for yourself, that’s the tough problem. Powers of Attorney are of very little value in that situation. Trusts are the answer, and it’s about who’s managing your life even if that life is just a SS check and a bed in a county-run facility. If Fate decides that’s to be your lot, don’t make it worse by failing to plan for the possibility. ---

We’re updating due to - Passage of time/deaths - Passage of time/legislative changes - Passage of time/our own physical-mental selves - To add a trust - To be sure that even if the country’s politics shift re: our marriage, it’s explicit that we are each other’s primary beneficiaries ---

I’m gobsmacked - I must’ve missed something significant over the weekend. I’m going to stick my head in the sand now and tell all and sundry about my boring day. I’m meeting with the lady doc, which will be interesting because it’ll be the first time I’ve met her, and slogging through a firedrill at work. I’ve lost most of the shreds of respect I had for my boss, which is frustrating. She’s trying to “help” me on a high-visibility project. Her help has demonstrated that she doesn’t know what I do. It’d be okay if it was just the details she didn’t know, but it’s literally most things. So I had to go in and redo what she did to help me. I was tempted to just let it explode (she’s getting dangerously close to some sort of precipice it seems), but I’d rather her not take me down with her. Also, I like to think I’m not an asshat, so I decided that wasn’t the best direction to take. The end result is that she’ll probably claim credit for my work instead, which is obnoxious, though I’ve noticed that a lot of what I do is preparing other people so they don’t look stupid. Another motivator is that I’d probably have to do it anyway, so might as well just cut to the chase. Anywho, It’s hot outside y’all. Drink your water. ---
