Due to spending a bit too much this month, I’m down to 50 dollars of food stamps til Sunday.
No, I don’t eat ramen.
Spaghetti will have to do.

Bella was also a Texas dog rescued some time after the hurricane in 2017ish, IMS. She’s had a hard time getting used to the rain as well and also the cold and the snow.

Years ago I read the comics and there was a Hagar the Horrible strip in which the revenooers were at his hovel to collect taxes and Hagar said “Next you’ll be taxing the air” and the revenooers looked at each other and gleefully said “Air?”

Washed 90% of the dishes; man did we use a lot yesterday, particularly making the cookies and the dinner (3 pots, one pan, one corning ware casserole). Will finish once my hands aren’t so pruney. Going to go work on the bedroom, floor and linens then will workout on the NuStep, might also go for a walk, it’s going to be up to 34\* with sun 🌞 yippee.

I truly don’t mean this to sound snarky, but what is it about the show that draws you? All I’ve seen of any of them are the commercials, and they are beyond cringe-worthy to me. And I understand like many “reality” shows, they’re scripted, especially the drama and tears and fights. But the very notion of finding the love of your life with cameras and crew looking on…

Obviously the shows are very popular, but I just don’t get it. Am I missing something?

FWIW, I also don’t get the appeal of the practical joker series - they’re not funny - they’re pretty much just cruel. Same with the funniest home videos which seem to mostly feature people getting hurt. I dunno - maybe it’s me.

> [@dogbutler](#):
>
> With buttons? That’s what I have, and it works fine.

Hers wouldn’t charge. It was dead dead dead. And it’s gone - from what I could tell, Amazon would just give credit towards another Kindle or electronic games, none of which I want. Plus why go thru the hassle for maybe 12¢ credit?

> [@Chefguy](#):
>
> I sent one back in the past. Standard rebate is $5.

Still not worth the hassle. And, as I said, it’s been left at the electronics recycling bin.

Trash and recycling have all been dispatched. I left 5 furnace filters next to the dumpster - **FCD** had bought them for his old shop but we no longer have anything 16X25. I’m hoping someone can use them. I hate to throw away good stuff.

And I got what I wanted at WalMart. Then ran into Aldi for a couple of things. Now I’m home - let the crocheting resume! Turns out I had plenty of yarn for one more blanket, so Hospice will be getting 7 from me plus one SIL sent to MIL - I certainly don’t need it.

And I’ve decided that when the kids are here on Firday, we’ll have chicken nuggets and fries and some sort of vegetable matter. So that’s one decision made. Now, to the recliner!

Good morning!

- Called the gutter guys to say, you’ve got our contract, so… can we schedule?
- Posted the paint guys’ info on the neighborhood forum because we’ll all get a discount if several neighbors have simultaneous jobs.
- Reminded my lovely wife to call the medical plan to ask, why did your refund check bounce? (ETA: “Because the person who was supposed to make the deposit didn’t and a whole lot of checks bounced.”)
- Contacted a conference at which I’m presenting to say, uh, still haven’t gotten an email with the early housing info.
- Called the Great State of My Birth to say, you sent the wrong birth certificate, what up? They claimed I had already called them. Yeah, no. I got the thing on Friday after they were closed. They were adamant. I figure this means mine was switched with the other person’s and that _she_ already called (though the note is in my file). They said a birth certificate is “secondary ID” and shouldn’t be an identity theft issue (but I’ll put my birth name on my Experian monitoring to watch anyway). What should I do with the other person’s birth certificate? “Oh, toss it.” I shall in fact shred it.
- Now I shall go to Spoonflower and buy some fabric with dragons, gaming dice, and castles to make lap quilts for my (grown-ass adult) nephews.

**shoe** That sucks about the shelf - not a great way to wake up at all.

I have a Kindle 3 that you’ll have to pry from my cold, dead hands. It’s probably at least 15 years old at this point but still chugging along fine. It uses [E-Ink](https://illumin.usc.edu/e-ink-technology-the-secret-behind-kindle/) - the text “appears” and then the device is essentially off until you hit the button for another page. There’s no backlight or refresh rate like with a monitor or tablet. It’s like reading a paper book, there’s no eye strain.

A friend is trying to get me to “upgrade” to some newer version but I’m pretty sure it works more like a regular tablet instead, which after working on a computer all day the last thing I want to do is stare at another form of computer for a couple of hours to read. It also doesn’t have buttons and is a touch screen and having fingerprints all over the place while I’m reading would drive me _insane_.

**Coppertone** did maintenance ever get your bathroom/shower leak repaired?

**susan** your state’s department of records scares me. Such complete disregard…

spoonflower is the best. i could go quite crazy there.

turns out last night there was a car that wandered into broad and spring garden. people were injured, the reporting that this was not intentional like new orleans, just a driver that got caught in the crowd.

the initial reports had the injuries due to fireworks not a car.

Good morning! Good afternoon for those on EST. Good evening to those in Greenwich Mean Time. (I always think about people in Greenwich stomping around and scowling.) My plans for the day are calling my sister, going to the gym, and stopping at Best Buy for a cable I need for the printer. And to think I once would have done all that after working a 10-hour day. However did I do it?

You remember my saying a former colleague of mine listed me in the acknowledgements of his book? I haven’t started reading it yet, but he DM’d me yesterday to say he’d quoted me in one chapter. I checked and yep, there it is, though I’m not referred to by name. My, how pithy I was. I once dated a guy with a slight lisp, so “pithy” would have meant something different and possibly more accurate.

My daughter said I inspired her to create something. Uh-oh. You’ve seen those cat memes that say, “If I fits, I sits”? Well, I once made a joke about her enclosed litter box, and she cross-stitched a sampler that says, “If I fits, I shits.” and hung it over the litter box. Thus I am immortalized. Or just mortalized.

Last night I dreamed I was making fried chicken and trying, for some reason, to recreate Colonel Sanders’ recipe.I have no idea why. I only got as far as adding black pepper when my mind got bored and switched to dreaming I’d done back to teaching and suddenly realized I hadn’t graded anything all nine weeks, and grades were due. Should’ve stuck to fried chicken.

She’s a chip of the not-so-ol’ gramma, she is! If you had the ingredients, I’d suggest mini pizzas, but you probably don’t have all that. My kids used to love making faces on them out of pepperoni and olive slices. And I see you’ve already decided on the ever-popular chicken nuggets. Good call.

Afternoon all. Shopping, banking and eating have all been completed and in about 20 minutes I’ll head over to the Edward Jones place and hand him a check to invest for me. Once that mission is complete, I will return to slothage, I think. Temperature is about 44F and should get close to 50F today.

**shoe** , sorry to hear about the shelf collapse. But look on the bright side, you don’t have to wait any longer to figure out how Murphy was going to take his revenge…

**Cat Glove** , sounds like a nice day with family.

**Coppertone** , not a Ramen person either, noodles will do just fine.

**FCM** , need to change my filter (30x20x1), thanks for the reminder.

**lily** , sounds like a pretty productive morning; take the afternoon off… 😉

**nellie** , actually stood on the GMT line in London years ago. And healing is going fine, long as I don’t overdo it (which I do, of course).

Need to get changed and go see the financial guy. Take care all.

Still getting over my cold. I’ve been improving since Friday. I think I’m basically recovered. Nevertheless, I decided I’d just have beef broth for lunch. (Vegemite toasties for breakfast.) It’s ‘spicy’ beef broth. And you know what? It actually _is_ spicy! Yay! 🙂

Something about **shoe** ’s spontaneously failing bookshelf (OMG, BTW!) made me wonder about something else: **JtC** , have you found any mysterious dirt piles/utensils in the house lately?? 👻

Bailey sometimes plays with her treats before she eats them; she’ll toss them in the air. I love that she does it – playing tells me that she’s a happy dog – but these days she can’t always track where the treat winds up coming down. Watching her look for it can be pretty entertaining. 😁 I always eventually help her, and she’s always so excited to “find” it!

Last night’s [Freda Payne](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freda_Payne) show was…good. Clearly the woman was once a top-notch singer, but it’s also clear that she’s 82. Still, there were many solid moments and I’m really glad I went. I can only hope to be on the [Blues Alley](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blues_Alley) stage when I’m her age and sounding half as good! It’s a great venue, I got to catch up with some friends, and now I can say that I’ve heard her perform “Band of Gold” live. But I’m also glad that I chose the early show: I was able to hit the grocery store on the way home and still walk in my front door by 8pm. 🙂

Tonight there’s a Zoom information session on the summer Vocal Jazz Summit I signed up for a couple of weeks ago. I have a feeling the session is aimed at people who are still deciding whether to go, but I figured it couldn’t hurt to register just in case I learn something useful.

Now to catch up on a bunch of stuff from last week before diving into the current MMP…

> I looked at picture, and my immediate response was, “Want”. Looked it up and it’s a bit more pricey than expected, as it is a GWP. According to the price history on the website (local equivalent of Amazon), it would have been ⅓ the price in October. So I’m not buying it, but at least I get to look at the picture of the one you did.

The thing with GWPs is that their “price” on the Lego site will only ever be $20-30 but you can’t ever buy them: they’re _only_ available as GWPs. As soon as a set is no longer the current GWP it’s considered “retired,” and the aftermarket price shoots up. So the Books Are My Passion set, “worth” $20 as a free GWP, cost 5x that via eBay (it wasn’t available on Amazon, where I’ve gotten other retired sets).

French is the only foreign language I can listen to when it comes to TV shows/movies: it’s what I studied in school, and I enjoy challenging myself by listening to it sometimes – like with the Netflix shows _[L’Agence](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt14746934/)_ and _[Lupin](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2531336/)_. If it’s called a Kindle, it still uses e-ink; the tablets are called Fire (they used to be “Kindle Fire,” which was needlessly confusing). But you’re correct that the newest Kindles don’t have buttons: you have to tap the side of the screen to change the page (however, Kindle screens don’t show fingerprints the way tablet screens do). I like some of the features on the newer Kindles – like colored e-ink! – but I _love_ being able to operate my current Kindle with one hand via buttons; I plan to hang onto it for as long as possible.

No. I hate the drama but sometimes there are just good people who ‘are there for the right reasons’. I hold out hope for romance/love and happily ever after. I haven’t watched all the seasons when I can tell that the lead is vile.

**nellie** hoping the report on the Maintenance Man is that he’s resting comfortably and will make a full recovery.

**metal mouse** hoping it’s a low risk, high return investment. yes, I know those are kinda contradictory and hard to find.

Swiffered the bed room, changed the sheets, cleaned the oven. I’m due for some R&R.

Aw, heck no, I left when I was 1 and haven’t ever had the faintest desire to live there. I like the blue states.

And we did ($400+). I really like the quality of their cotton.

I showed up in two memoirs. One I asked the writer to remove my last name, which she did. One used my first name, and is very identifying, and I don’t agree with some of the writer’s understanding of events, but it’s not worth pursuing. I appear indirectly in a Famous Author’s memoir, where he grossly misunderstands something that I can document, but again, not worth it. FWIW, I checked with everyone\* in my own memoir before publishing.

🎶 farm living in the life for me! 🎵

Now I’m going to have to look up the show and listen to the song to get rid of the mind-worm.

I’ve been much more productive than I expected. I stripped the bed and got the sheets started, all of the bedding, blankets, kitty beds and throws are going to be washed in hot water today. I’ve also vacuumed all of their trees and poles.

I took some stuff to the thrift store, but had some extra expanding drawer organizers that I gave to the lady who runs the small produce store. That was after I paid for my purchases because I knew she would offer to pay for them and I didn’t want her money. I was planning on giving them to the thrift store if she didn’t want them.

Hubs is trying to cut back on the sugar but I saw that she was selling chocolate and peanut butter buckeyes and Hubs just loves them, so I got a container and will ration them out instead of letting him eat the entire package in one afternoon. I know that sounds super controlling but we both know that he has no control when it comes to that sort of thing and appreciates me setting limits for him.

He knows where I “hide” the sweets, he could easily get them anytime he wants but the act of them being “hidden” seems to help get them out of his mind.

While I was at the thrift store, I bought some fuzzy blankets and took them, a couple of old pillows and some senior gooshy cat fud to the rescue place. I did not pet the old kitty. I can’t risk getting attached and bringing her home. I’m still not over losing Missy earlier this year, I’m not ready to fall in love with a cat who won’t live but a few more years. Besides, she’s too old to live happily with our rambunctious youngsters.

I keep telling myself this over and over. Hopefully someone will adopt her before we give in, I really think it would be best all around.

Hubs noticed a worm on Jolene’s butt yesterday so my next stop was at the vet for a couple of doses of de-wormer. (Hence the extreme mid-month bedding and throws pile) then went to the UPS sto and learned that one of the packages I was returning actually needed a box so it went back into the car.

I got lunch at Capt. D’s and fed my leftovers to the parking lot birds. I know, I know. Don’t waste your time scolding me I won’t listen.

I promised an online stranger that I would send a WV postcard to her AL kindergarten class so my next stop was the visitor center. Which I couldn’t find because I thought it was on the Chapmanville side of Logan, not the Charleston side.

When you get off the interstate in town, the off ramp curls around a few homes, one of which is always brightly decorated for the seasons with nice neat flower gardens in front of the house. She is ready for Valentines Day now, it looks very cute.

I found my way back to the house and knocked on the door to tell the man who answered my name and that I always enjoyed looking at his home when I saw it. He looked super pleased and called his wife over because she was the one who did all of the decorating. I repeated my compliments and added more because she looked so surprised and happy. Then I wished them a good day and left.

I stopped at Food Lion for milk and found some **[Artigiano Blood Orange cheese](https://www.belgioioso.com/products/artigiano/)** which will also be rationed as carefully as his candy.

I came home, boxed the curtain rod, drugged the fuzzbutts and went back out to take it to the UPS sto and find the Visitor’s Center. Which didn’t have post cards. So I went to the Rec Center and bought a Chief Logan State Park post card. It did say West Virginia so I figured that would work this time. I’ll have to keep my eyes open for more post cards while we are doing tourist stuff.

Now I’m finishing up the laundry and stressing because I haven’t even touched my white work all week and I have class tonight.

You must be getting close to being let off-leash. I’ll bet you can’t wait! Hubs is feeling so well that I’m constantly having to tell him to not lift things. I’ll be really happy when he’s off those restrictions as well.

Oh, I love it! I might do the same thing 🙂

> **JtC** , have you found any mysterious dirt piles/utensils in the house lately?? 👻

I haven’t, but we have gotten several official pieces of mail for Donna and I have always been very prompt about contacting her granddaughter to come and get them, so maybe she happy that her grandkid has been coming over in the evenings. (I did offer to just hold everything until the estate was ready to file taxes, but she drives right by us on her way home and says its no trouble at all to pick them up one at a time.)

Well, I need to get back to the laundry and at least look at my lesson for tonight so I don’t go in totally flat-footed.

I’ll check on everyone later.
