> Hmmm… I’m going to have to do some more checking. For example, the link you give lists Tar Meneldur, son of Tar Elendil, among the Kings of Numenor, along with Tar Aldarion and so on – but I believe Aragorn is descended through Tar Meneldur’s brother Silmarlien.

Silmarien was female. She was the eldest child of Tar-Aldarion. Her younger brother inherited, because at that time, Numenorean law had provisions for queens only if there were no male heirs. Later this was changed, and Numenor had ruling Queens who had younger brothers who did not become king. The eldest child of the queen inherited the throne.

And Aragorn’s ancestry is pretty clearly spelt out. His last Numenorean ruling ancestor was Tar-Aldarion. Silmarien’s son founded the royal line of Lord of Andunië, and ran directly down to Amandil, Elendil, Isildur, and hence to Aragorn.

**Loopy**! You don’t have genealogical tables?

How do you follow the line of Bëor down to Beren, then Elros, then Elendil, then Aragorn without one?

While I can see the OP’s point, I think that each new JRRT fan takes away from either book or film that which is meaningful to the individual.

I loved the Hobbit, and FOTR. I did not care for TT or ROTK until I saw the films–oh, I had read them, but not reread and reread them. I do wish PJ had done the Hobbit, b/c I doubt that any one else will take such care to get the props and settings right. Now, b/c of the films, I have reread the last 2 books and gotten more out of them.

did the films take liberties and shortcuts that are difficult for fans and devotees to reconcile? Yep–IMO, b/c it’s a different media. Some of the stuff, I didn’t see theire point and wanted to strangle Phillipa Boyens, but I do think the heart of ME came thru.

Anyway, I have a friend who has the charts and the lineages, and is working on Elvish speech. I know I won’t develope that deeply–I am not interested in it to that degree. Does that make me “less” of a fan? I don’t think so–I think it makes me one sort of fan.

It is hard, though, when something that you thought was “yours” and unique becomes the Hot New Thing.

Ok, the chart gets scrapped. It’s obviously incomplete, and the type is just too small for these aging eyes to read.

So I’m glad this thread has finally forced me to get into this area of the lore. So far I’ve just picked-and-chose when I needed to focus on a particular person in the line.

I’m sure Sample\_the\_B\*\*\*h will be glad to see the chart come down – but she ain’t gonna be happy when she finds out I’m building a new one!

“We can rebuild it. We can make it faster, stronger, better than before!”
