Up, mostly caffeinated, and fed. I woke **Mrs Magill** at 6:00 this morning when Harley Quinn and her goons were dropping out of the vents. Luckily, I could see them just before they jumped out, so I could kick them away. See? I wasn’t thrashing about in bed, I was _saving our lives_!

Last night was a good night (except for the near Tycho Brache imitation. It always amazes me how good and free I feel, even days after fully presenting and being out.

Dinner tonight is Beef Burgundy, which is in the slow cooker. I’ll boil some potatoes after yoga to go with it. That’s all that’s on the docket for today.

Up, caffeinayed, and sheveled. I’ve cleaned, dusted, and scooped Spot’s box. I shot a fly. Spot has lazed in the sunroom. I shall start laundry shortly.

> **Flyboy** , that sounds like a terrific dinner!

It was. The dinner, a 20% tip, and parking was roughly CDN$300. That comes out to about US$225. Not bad for an anniversary dinner. That’s two appetisers, two duck dinners, four cocktails, and one dessert. If you want to treat yourself, maybe go up and give them a try. They’re open from 08:00 to 21:00 (22:00 on Fridays and Saturdays) except for Tuesdays. Do make a reservation. [Au Comptoir](https://www.aucomptoir.ca), 2278 W 4th Ave, Vancouver, BC, V6K 1N8. Check out the various menus on the link.

There was a small parking lot down the block and around the corner. I had to set up a pay-by-phone account. I was beginning to think the registration would take longer than it would take to eat dinner. Anyway, I’m now set up for pay-by-phone parking in Vancouver, BC. I wanted to to buy three hours of parking, but the robot told me that 180 minutes cost the same as parking for 12 hours. I went ahead and paid the CDN$15, as it would have been poor form to receive a violation in someone else’s country.

I occasionally come across something which includes mushrooms which claims to be ‘plant based’ and it takes all my self control to not go all angry mycologist at them.

It decided to be posh food day today (if not as posh as **FlyBoy** ’s); sadly the gooood bakery closes Sundays, so I went to a different nearby town, which involves passing, and stopping at, the gooood strawberry place.

I also attended the posh ice cream place\[1\], the bougie farm shop, and the posh supermarket, obtaining a selection of stuff to make really nice sammiches and a couple of days’ dinners. Plus, of course, I can pick some home-grown tomatoes, to add a little garnish of smugness.

Aside from maybe a touch of defilthifying the place and maybe some pottering in the garden, there are no more plans for the day.

I’ve paid the invoice for the knob-and-tube replacement. It’s under $6,400. I wish the house had had modern wiring when I bought it, but the upgrade wasn’t as bad as I feared.

High temps continue to be over 100F/38C with no end in sight. The weather guessers say it might be Labor Day before we get a break. So we are in indoor activities only mode.

The one good thing about the heat is it makes the Bermuda grass go dormant so no need to have it mowed.

I’m being harassed by a very upset cat as apparently _none_ of his toys are ones he wants to play with. And he’s being very judgy about my toy flinging technique (he wants play fetch for at least 30 minutes a day). But here is Oliver being much cuter and helping me work from home earlier this week:

I posted twice yesterday and forgot this both times, so before I forget again: belated happy anniversary, **flyboy**! 🎉

All of the Mumpets are so freakin’ cute! Like owner like pet?? 😁

Yesterday I must have been even more tired than I realized, because I went to sleep at around my normal time and didn’t wake up\[1\] until 8:50am!! That’s 2 hours past my usual latest “wow I slept in” time. The result is that today is flying by: it’s already 2:09pm, and I _just_ finished taking care of some personal administrivia and doing a little bit of work (30 min of approving timecards, cleaning out my inbox, and drafting some emails to be sent in the morning). I brought my lunch up here, and am still finishing it. When I’m done eating and posting it will be time to finally take a shower (I waited 'cause it’s a little warm up here), then I’ll go downstairs and build Lego until it’s time to relocate to the TV room for the night. My head is better today, but I expect that the shower (and hair-washing) will result in some temporary soreness…this time I’ll take some Tylenol.

I’m glad that I’ll be working from home tomorrow, but my hermit-ing will be briefly interrupted by an 8:00am dentist appointment (routine cleaning + x-rays). It’ll be my first time there since my crown was installed in late May: I was supposed to have this cleaning the following week, but after three visits in one month I was dentist-ed out so I rescheduled it for the next time my preferred hygienist was available. I’ll log into work early just long enough to send the emails I drafted; as soon as I get back home I’ll be heads-down (with meetings and tasks) until at least 1:00pm.

I either ate too much lunch, ate too fast, or both. Blurf. ☹ Whatever the case, I’ll feel better once I’ve showered and am at the kitchen table with new Lego and an old _West Wing_ in front of me.

Understandably, I am rather hesitant to use a public restroom while presenting as **Mollie** , so I held it. I didn’t have an accident on the way home, but it.was touch and go. I probably should have bit.the bullet and gone at the restaurant.

Your hesitation is absolutely understandable, but presumably the restaurant knows about/is ok with hosting your group…of course that says nothing about the other patrons, but as public restrooms go could that one be _relatively_ safe for personal experimentation?

I played less of that than other games, but it’s definitely a significant memory from that time in the '80s when arcades were to teenage boys (and some girls) what the mall was to teenage girls (and some boys). The guy behind the counter at the Lego store speculated that – if they’re going to keep doing classic arcade game consoles – Galaga might be next. While I certainly played a little of that back in the day and I know it’s iconic, it isn’t as meaningful to me as Donkey Kong and Pac-Man; I’d rather see Space Invaders. I’d also buy a Ms. Pac-Man set.

Short answer: No, mushrooms are **NOT** plants. Period. They are the spore-bearing structures of fungi, and fungi are a completely separate kingdom of life from plants.

 Long pontification follows, about taxonomy…
———
Once upon a time, I think this may have still been true at the early parts of my own lifetime, all forms of life were considered to be either plants or animals.

By some time, at least in the late 1960s or early 1970s, we knew that taxonomy was more complex than that. I’m pretty sure, by then, that we knew that fungi were not plants, but a kingdom of their own.

When I was in college, in the 1980s, I learned the _Five Kingdom_ system. An instructor drew a diagram on the blackboard that looks like a _Micky Mouse_ hand with three fingers. I hoped that if I Googled, I might find an image that looks like my Botany professor’s _Mickey Mouse_ hand drawing. Not quite, but if you look at this image, maybe you can get the idea, and make sense of what I will hereafter write.

[![](https://i.pinimg.com/736x/47/23/93/472393242199cd00415449c6d71874da.jpg) ](https://i.pinimg.com/736x/47/23/93/472393242199cd00415449c6d71874da.jpg)

The three fingers were the three multicellular kingdoms of life, animals, plants, and fungi.

The palm of the hand was the kingdom _Protista_, which supposedly included all unicellular eukaryotic (meaning that they had a complete cell nucleus and organelles) forms of life. Except yeast. Yeast, I was taught, were fungi, even though they were unicellular. Thinking back, I realize that many other life forms, classified into _Protista_, were really similar enough to plants or animals, just as yeast was to fungi, that they probably belong there as well; and I am pretty sure than under more modern systems of taxonomy, they are.

The wrist was _Monera_, simpler unicellular life forms, prokaryotic (meaning that they did not have nuclei or organelles). Two forms of life, I was told, were included in _Monera_, bacteria, and blue-green algae.

Anyway, under the original two-kingdom model, fungi were indeed considered plants. One of the things driving taxonomists to decide that that model was too simple was surely the realization that fungi are at least as different from plants, as animals are from plants. In fact, I believe more modern genetic analysis has shown fungi to be more closely related to animals, than to plants.

Much more recently, I have learned that under a new system of taxonomy, kingdoms are not even the highest taxon, any more. Now, above kingdoms, are three domains—_Archaea_, _Bacteria_, and _Eukarya_.

_Eukarya_ includes everything that was under plants, animals, fungi, and protists. Plants, animals, and fungi are still recognized as kingdoms within _Eukarya_, but many life forms no longer fall under any defined kingdoms.

The name _“blue-green algae”_ is now deprecated. They are no longer considered to be any kind of algae, but are now considered a form of bacteria, and called _cyanobacteria_.

The big discovery was that certain organisms previously thought to be a weird sort of bacteria, are really something else entirely. Different, enough, not to merely call for a Kingdom of their own, but for a new taxon above that; hence the domain _Archaea_. There have been some speculations that whatever event first created life on this planet, that there might have been two separate events, with _Bacteria_ having been created by one, and _Archaea_ by the other. I think that theory is generally not held to be true, but the point is that _Archaea_ are that much different from _Bacteria_ to give rise and credibility to such a theory.

And I believe that _Eukarya_ are now most widely thought to have evolved from _Archaea_, not from _Bacteria_.

I take the view that pedantry has its place, but there are also times to relax a little. Or would you like me to add tomato to a fruit salad? 😉

FYI, high school science classes I took in the mid-80s did not cover any of the book you just wrote 🙂 . It was “it’s a plant or an animal”, with none of the later complications described.

I now find myself reminded of an episode of _Cutthroat Kitchen_. The last round challenge was to make some sort of fruit-based dessert, and one of the offered sabotages was to take away the opponent’s fruits, and substitute a selection of items that are technically fruits, but traditionally considered to be _“vegetables“_.

Now, I do not have nearly the culinary talent to compete on such a show, much less to survive to the last round, but if I did, and I was on that episode, I think I would have _wanted_ that sabotage. One of the items in that sabotage was a bell pepper. Though traditionally treated as a _“vegetable”_, I have no doubt at all that a competent chef could produce a wonderful fruit-based dessert based on it, that the judge would have loved, that could have beaten the competing item made from a more traditional fruit.

High school biology also taught there were two sexes and gender was the same as sex. Gender diversity was a mental illness like homosexuality. Unfortunately, a lot of people stopped learning in high school.

All I remember from high school biology was dissecting a worm and a frog with a very squeemish lab partner. (Oddly enough, she and I became friends.) I don’t recall anything being taught about human biology - at least not sex stuff. That was handled in the Health portion of Home Ec. Even with that, I was woefully underinformed about, well, everything. I did eventually figure it out. Such were things in the 1969-70 school year.

My grands are lucky - their mom taught middle school sex ed, so they’ll know it all. Criminy, Roxy ( at 8!!!) is already showing signs of puberty and complaining about her breasts bouncing when she runs. Daughter will be (or has?) acquiring training bras for her. Yoiks!!!

We got a little rain - enough that mowing was contraindicated. Maybe tomorrow? My supper was the last of the cuke salad and the first of the egg salad. Kinda boring, but easy. Now, back to my recliner.

I had my first almost a meal since thursday. Kept it easy, just rice. Oddly, when my stomach was really bad my bad back felt the best it has in years. Not a permanent trade-off I’m willing to make.

I remember dissecting the worm and the frog in high school bio. Then during my senior year I helped out my bio teacher by re-filling those dissection trays with that weird black wax. I spilled some of that wax on my forearm. Holy shit that hurt. It’s some kind of petroleum wax mixture, so it doesn’t cool and then flake off. I still have a faint scar on my arm.

We had a gourmet dinner of beanie wienies and an ear of corn. Livin’ large!
