IE8 opened but when I tried to use it, it would shut down.
I’m reinstalling IE8.
Thanks. If the most difficult part is removing the keyboard, I’ve already done that once. I’ll check it out.
I open IE8. It tells me my last session closed unexpectedly. It asks if I want to restore my last session or go to my home page.
I pick home page. It then says it has encountered a problem and needs to close. It then says Dr. Watson’s postmortem dubugger has encountered a problem. IE8 then hangs up. I try to close it and it says it’s not responding.
Try again.
I pick restore last session. IE8 disappears immediately without notice. It disappears in the Task Manager.

I tried the Java fix but it didn’t solve it.
The Capicom, Outlook, and Windows XP fixes require the use of IE.
Uninstall all the old Java versions. The current version is version 6, update 21.
Don’t you need Java Runtime environment (JRE) to run java apps on web pages? Not sure if it is also needed for Javascript. If so, and you don’t have it, half of the web sites out there won’t work properly - if at all.
You can minimize your exposure to javascript exploits if you use firefox with the noscript plug-in.

The HJT log looks a lot better. I think if you uninstalled Roxio you’d be a lot better off.
In Control Panel, Administrative Tools, open the event viewer. Look in the Application and System logs. What recent errors are there, particularly involving IE?
I didn’t see Roxio on the add/remove list.
Here are some errors:
The Application Management service terminated with the following error:
The specified module could not be found.

Look for Sonic in the control panel then. Sonic bought Roxio a few years ago.

I removed all sonic stuff.
I found a website telling me how to completely remove Roxio & Sonic stuff. I followed it.
Is it XP service pack 3? Right-click on “My Computer” and select Properties to see the SP level.

One thing not mentioned so far is Firefox. It used to be a great browser, but recent editions have become total memory hogs.
I now use Chrome, and my computer runs MUCH faster.
Chrome is faster at many tasks (Javascript, page rendering) but it can also be more of a memory hog if you have a lot of tabs open. The latest versions of Firefox are actually better at this. See here. On my netbook, having too many tabs open in Chrome slowed down the whole system to an unusable crawl. On Firefox the problem was much less noticeable.

Java and Javascript are entirely different things. Java is not needed for Javascript. For the common person, Java is rarely needed for anything these days, applets still feel as slow as ever especially if Java itself has to load, the autoupdater takes up resources, both the plugin and autoupdater open up additional avenues for exploits, and it’s just a pain in the ass in general. Die, Java, die! Uninstall it – ALL versions of it – unless you can think of specific things or webpages that YOU use that require it.
For the application manager error, paste this into a text file. Change the file name extension from .txt to .reg then double-click on it and answer yes:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AppMgmt]
"Start"=dword:00000004
In HJT remove the lines that start with 02 and 012, restart, and try IE again.
ETA- rerun CCleaner befor restarting.

So you don’t need JRE for javascript? That’s odd because I was midway through a book on Javascript a couple of months ago and to do the exercises I know I had to download either that or the SDK - and I’m pretty sure it was JRE.
Java is so popular because of being platform independent. I assume it’s still an interpreted rather than compiled language at least as far as web apps go so you’re always going to take a performance hit for that.
Firefox isn’t so much a memory hog as it is leaky. Pull up taskmanager after you have FF open with your standard number of tabs. Make a note of how much memory is being used. Then look at it several hours later after doing a lot of browsing with tabs being opened and closed all of the time. For me, it goes from around 250meg to over 1gig. Then I have to close it and restart. I don’t know why that is such a problem for Mozilla but it’s something they really need to work on.

Javascript is interpreted by the Browser, there is no need to install anything else besides a reasonably current browser. The JRE (Java Runtime Environment) is for running Java applications or Applets (which can run inside the Browser), it is definitely not needed to run Javascript.
Java is only seldom used on websites these days, most web apps you encounter are normal HTML/CSS websites with Javascript.
And current implementations of both, Java and Javascript, have Just in Time compilers, so they are not exclusively interpreted anymore. The performance of Javascript has improved dramatically in newer browsers due to that development.
