And the more interested someone is in emphasizing that they are free-thinking, the more skeptical I am about their actual free thinking tendencies.

Actually, having thought about it a little more, I think the real problem I have is that he’s characterizing others as teenage girls, as if the best he expects of anyone is this totally adolescent “OMG, I can’t believe it! A black conservative! Gosh!”. It suggests he isn’t interested in serious discourse because he’s already decided that no one else is capable of it: they are going to be struck dumb by his very existence.

It wouldn’t be such a big deal if it weren’t his user name. It’s like he wants the fact that he has such low expectations of people with dissenting opinions to be the basis of his identity on the board.

Lighten up, Francis. It’s funny. and given the percentage of blacks that voted for Obama, it is pretty shocking. Perhaps even more so from the side who believe that every black person should vote democrat.

But to get back to reality, and while I recognize that one of the arrows in your oh-so-clever quiver is to try to portray me as being out of date - which of course is easier than actually arguing against what I’ve said - but if you want to proclaim that a new day has dawned and that the nation’s (and SDMB’s) libbies don’t try with all their might to portray conservatives as racist, I’m afraid that claim is going to require some fairly significant documentation.

I think the use of “OMG” is perfectly in line with the way a liberal - or at least the politically vocal amongst them - could logically be expected to react to the news that a black person is a conservative. At least he didn’t stick a roll-eyes smilie at the end of his name as well, 'cause the news of a black conservative around here would surely generate plenty of those too.

In the past year, in three separate situations, I’ve met three black guys who told me they were Republicans and that they bet I had never met a black Republican.

Of course given the percentage of blacks that didn’t vote at all, the percentage of black voters that voted for Obama really doesn’t tell us much about anything.

… The levels of participation by black, Hispanic and Asian eligible voters all increased from 2004 to 2008, reducing the voter participation gap between themselves and white eligible voters. This was particularly true for black eligible voters. Their voter turnout rate increased 4.9 percentage points, from 60.3% in 2004 to 65.3% in 2008, nearly matching the voter turnout rate of white eligible voters (66.1%). For Hispanics, participation levels also increased, with the voter turnout rate rising 2.7 percentage points, from 47.2% in 2004 to 49.9% in 2008. Among Asians, voter participation rates increased from 44.6% in 2004 to 47.0% in 2008. Meanwhile, among white eligible voters, the voter turnout rate fell slightly, from 67.2% in 2004 to 66.1% in 2008.

Much of the surge in black voter participation in 2008 was driven by increased participation among black women and younger voters. The voter turnout rate among eligible black female voters increased 5.1 percentage points, from 63.7% in 2004 to 68.8% in 2008. Overall, among all racial, ethnic and gender groups, black women had the highest voter turnout rate in November’s election – a first.

Get off the cross, I’m not painting it as a scandal, much less a national one. I was noting the bemusement that you declared that you had him on ignore by replying to a post of his that you clearly took him off of ignore to read and respond to.
