BBC1, BBC2, or something else?
At the London Olympics the BBC had about 24 consecutive digital streams available of everything that was going on. no fee, no ads, no commentary in some cases. The main channels were reserved for the headline sports (but again, no additional costs or ad breaks)
For Sochi they are doing the same over 6 dedicated HD streams but I don’t how those overseas can access them.
We are spoiled for choice over here on these big events.
third, huh? Even better!
A quick look at the BBC iPlayer on my Kindle shows several blocks of Olympics coverage on BBC 2 on Saturday, starting at 3 AM EST. I haven’t looked at the BBC website yet, but if it’s anything like 2012 I will be impressed.
I just saw Evgeny Plushenko skate, I had no idea! I had a huge crush on him years ago. He KICKED ASS. Some homely American skater is on now, just fell on his butt.
The NBC coverage is so bad, that they are holding off showing the Opening Ceremonies to Friday night, and showing actual events before the Opening Ceremonies!
Wait, what do you mean it’s the IOC that decided that…
Yeah, I’m not gonna deny stuff like this happened before.
The propensity of Canadians to complain about American homerism is baffling to me. Canadians are among the most arrogantly flag-waving patriots on earth, endlessly trumpeting our alleged superiority, and seem fantastically oblivious of their own behavior in this regard. I mean, don’t get me wrong, it’s a wonderful country with much to recommend it, but we’ve developed an in-your-face! attitude towards nationalism I find increasingly kind of gross.
There’s also a running we’re-better-than-Americans thing going on which is generally harmless and the kind of thing I’m sure any country has with its neighbors, but it can become ignorant, ugly and embarrassing at times.
That was that asshole whatisface who has never medaled at the fucking worlds or Olympics because he sucks. Plushenko needs a haircut. He looks ridiculous. I really want to like Scott Hamilton but my god the man never shuts up! Let them skate, by god, Scotty, JUST LET THEM SKATE AND SHUT UP ALREADY.
My Russian next door neighbor informs me that American coverage sucks because there is so little of it.
True to their Microsoft heritage, the NBC Olympics web site does not work in Firefox. And the design sucks big time.
Just had to come on here and post that Bob Costas said “Pussy Riot”. Twice. In Prime Time, I think. It was 10:25PM Eastern.
He said “Pussy”. Huh Huh. [/Beavis&Butthead]
Plushenko is pretty homely as well. But yea, he crushed that short program! I was wondering whether the Russian committee had made a blunder by awarding their only berth to him, over several other higher ranked Russians. But that quad! And such style! Yup. Good choice, guys! Hope he’s saving something for the actual men’s competition.
I’ve been watching and enjoying the coverage by CBC for many, many years. There was one or two Olympics where the other Canadian station had the coverage and we did not get it so I was stuck with NBC. yuck. Sure did enjoy watching all the coverage this morning that CBC had, particularly that they showed every single competitor, pairs in the figure skating team event.
And if you thought Evgeny was good, what the heck did you think about the male skater from Japan? He was amazing!
In Japan, all the major networks will share in the coverage as well as a few satellite channels and online. The opening and closing ceremonies and all events in which Japanese athletes are favored will be shown live in their entirety. Japan is 5 hours ahead of Sochi so the opening ceremony will start at 1am local time very late Friday night. It’s a good thing I have Saturday off. :-))
Because it’s nationalistic and xenophobic for American networks to focus on events that Americans are participating in. When networks in other countries focus on their athletes, it’s … different. Because they’re not Americans.
Aww, where’d he come from??? He skated like a robot specially built for the Olympics. I think if Evgeny got a haircut, no one would recognize him. And Evan Lysacek isn’t skating in this Olympics, which is really disappointing.
The Olympics has become a time for US citizens to hang their head in shame. I was hopeful when I saw NBC was streaming the events online, but it’s only for customers who subscribe to this, that, or some other BS paid service.
I won’t be bothering with the Olympics.
So, is there a tape-delay for the opening ceremonies or is it “fuck you, you were at work, you get to miss it”?
I’m hoping we can go the distance without hearing from Lindsay Vonn. NBC has a pretty low bar to jump in order to top their coverage of the last summer games, where on one of the heavier nights of competition they decided that half their prime time show should be a replay of the US women’s team gymnastics gold.
They seem to have a pretty simple flowchart of what to cover. It’s like: Is this something that Americans are likely to win? If not, fuck it. For biathlon we’ll get maybe 2 minutes of coverage, tops. I’m afraid snowboarding in the winter games will be the equivalent of beach volleyball in the summer games- monopolizing far too much of the coverage. Not that they’d listen to my advice, but I want more coverage of more sports, zero human interest stories, and zero time with Bob Costas.
It’s working fine for me. I agree the design sucks, though.
Make sure you have the latest version of Flash. (Internet Explorer and Chrome automatically update.)
Where can I find a schedule?
I’m not kidding, I want to watch some curling. I have no illusions that NBC will be showing it in prime time, and I don’t have cable. I may try the BBC online option but I don’t know when the games are.
