The way we described it in USAF was that the CO & XO stood back to back as a single mind-melded entity. The XO’s job was to face downwards and run the hierarchy of subordinates, while the CO faced upwards to cater to the needs of the higher-ups. And this pattern was, or should be, largely replicated all up and down the hierarchy. Even at the low level of an infantry platoon you had the upward-facing Lieutenant and the downward-facing platoon Sergeant. The higher up the hierarchy, the more sharp the divide between the stuff in the XO’s bailiwick and the stuff in the CO’s. It wasn’t necessarily good cop / bad cop as such, but for sure if there was bad news, you first heard about it from the XO. And since the CO was your first level of appeal from an XO decision you didn’t like, at least sometimes that’d trigger a reversal of policy. Which contributed to the good cop / bad cop dynamic even if that wasn’t a deliberate plot by the CO/XO mind-meld to foster that dynamic. ---

I’ve never been in the military, but I took Navy ROTC in high school and the dynamic even played out there - the “assistant instructor” was a gruff, bullish master chief who’d been in the shit in Vietnam and had joined the Navy to stay out of jail, whereas the head instructor was a kindly, approachable submarine captain who dispensed sage advice. ---

Seriously, I probably don’t want to know, but what could the motivation possibly be for the buyer? Presumably these are all preserved, so it can’t be cannibalism. They look nice lined up on your coffee table as a conversation piece? Hmm. I’m sort outta ideas too. Is there some voodoo or similar BS where a dried toe, or portion thereof is an important ingredient in the witches brew along with eye of newt and wing of bat? Perhaps, like rhino horn, toes represent a perpetually erect form of phallic interest. Such that all truly effective folk aphrodisiacs need some toe to work properly? All the above is pure speculation without research. ---
