Wet and 77F/25C will kill you given enough hours. The news article says he’s in the (low) mountains outside Melbourne. The Melbourne metro weather the last few & next few days is a high of 60-65F / 15-18C and a low of 43-48F / 5-10C. With intermittent rain. A skilled outdoorsman with enough dry gear and a tent could be comfortable enough. A lone man on the run dressed for the daytime when the shootout occurred would be hard pressed to be _compos mentis_ at sunrise the next day. ---

Where he lived, Porepunkah, is in the ‘high country’ of north-eastern Victoria. This area hosts most of the snowfields (Mt Beauty, Mt Buller, Mt Hotham, Falls Creek etc etc) and it’s been a bumper season for snow this year! In other words, it’s bloody cold up in them thar’ hills. (Removed weather-bureau link, wasn’t working properly). Average max temperatures for the next 7 days…3c. Minimum… -3 but getting as low as -6c. ---

I put it here because I didn’t think he’s evil. With his wife on deployment, and taking care of five kids by himself (and at 34 with five kids, I’m guessing he didn’t have a lot of time to be young), I think he just snapped. It wasn’t planned. I think he was like, ‘Fine! I’m pulling over! Get out!’ And then, ‘Heh, heh, heh. I’ll let her stand there, and I’ll go to the next exit and circle around to get her after she’s learned her lesson.’ So I stand by just stupid. 😉 ---

I know that stretch of 512 very well. It is freakin nasty. To me, the idea of putting a 4y/o in that particular spot is just unthinkable. ---

It hasn’t been a banner week for 4-year-olds. An Amish woman from Ohio is accused of killing her 4-year-old son by throwing him off a dock into a lake as a “test of faith”. Her husband died earlier when he failed to complete a swim as a faith test. She reportedly had tried to walk on water at the lake but just fell in. Question for the woman: if you have faith, why do you need to test it? If you have to test it, is it really faith? The word means belief without proof and without or even against available evidence. I know, you have faith that Og wants you to test your faith. Circling the drain, I call it. ---

She had faith in her (false) god. She didn’t have faith that her husband and kid had faith in the same (false) god. So she ran her experiment to see if they did have sufficient faith. Or, more likely, she’s just a psychopathic murderer hoping to blame the vagaries of Jeebus for her crimes. ---

It’s very weird - the Amish reject violence _even in self defense_. Which is not to say she can’t be an Amish who is bad at being Amish. There have been Amish murderers before, but their killing isn’t driven by their religious beliefs. ---

Cut yourself a huge amount of slack. You were 5, not 25, or even 15. And the world 40 or 50 years ago was not nearly as ready to take a kid’s side as recently. I’m sorry you had that trauma at a vulnerable age. ---

My dad was in the FAA. As such, he had a backwards-rotating schedule. A recipe for sleep deprivation. I visited him one summer when he was stationed at DAG. We went into Barstow do do laundry or grocery shopping or something, and he took off without me. (I was 10 or so.) I was running after him as he drove away. He realised his mistake, of course. Total accident, but I still remember it. ---
