OK, this is a first for me. A robbery suspect, fleeing on foot, crawled into a storm drain and refused to come out. The cops sent a K-9 dog in after him (not sure why, and certainly not a good idea.) Why is it “certainly not a good idea?” Any good tactic can be a failure in a specific event. Dogs are far more expendable than are officers. And often are far more “persuasive” than even a group of officers. With usually less injury to everyone if the suspect is determined to fight back. This amounts to what the military calls “tunnel clearing”. Which is nasty violent dangerous work taking skilled troops. Perhaps they just should have thrown a bunch of military grenades in there, followed up by a few clips of M-16 fire? Then sent somebody in with a bucket to bring out a chunk of the former robber for DNA identification? That hardly seems better. ---
