What possible motive could there be for cutting up and stealing something like this apart from jollies? The story never says what the “built” statue was made of but it it was bronze it would be worth quite a bit as scrap. ---

I was thinking the same. A [Henry Moore sculpture got stolen several years ago](https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2009/may/17/henry-moore-sculpture-theft-reclining-figure) and melted down for scrap. The sculpture was worth £3m; the scrap: £1500. ---

The statue was recovered, but it was burned and dismantled. In positive news, MLB and the 30 Major League Baseball teams have [agreed to pay for the cost of replacing it.](https://www.mlb.com/news/mlb-clubs-to-replace-vandalized-jackie-robinson-statue) There was a gofundme to raise money for the replacement. MLB has requested that that money be spent on promoting baseball in America. They will also be contributing to that, as well as replacing the statue. ---
