Their argument seems especially weak, but I guess they have to try _something_, as bad as it is.

This is a sign that they don’t have any good answer for what they did.

Somewhere in the Bible there is a line about “I knew you in the womb” that the pro-birth people like to throw around as proof God opposes abortion (as opposed to the at least two places where he appears to condone it).

There’s no justification to extrapolate from this,

> Now the word of the Lord came to me saying,
> “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
> and before you were born I consecrated you;
> I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”
> Jeremiah 1:4,5

to God knows everyone before they were formed in the womb.
If God knows everyone that way then God intentionally allows pregnancies that He knows will end in abortion.

I just find it interesting to watch Christians that rationalize babies being born with cancer (et al.) as part of God’s Mysterious Plan deal with the cognitive dissonance that comes from the inescapable conclusion that abortion must also be a part of God’s Mysterious Plan if their “world view” is to remain consistant.

Because that’s what people are doing when they try to use religion to justify an opposition to abortion. The Bible does not explicitly forbid it, so people who are opposed to abortion (for various reasons, most especially to deny women bodily autonomy) try to use that to convince Christians to oppose it. Pointing out that flaw **is** an effective way to counter that argument.

It’s not 100% effective but it isn’t 100% ineffective either. It’s not “magical thinking” that convinces people but a semantic argument.

Just because a person starts from a background of faith, that doesn’t mean every decision they make can’t have logic behind it. That’s a dangerously ignorant and defeatist philosophy to have.

Try to use what to convince them? If the bible isn’t what they are using, then what is?

Well, I disagree (obviously). I didn’t say every decision is made without reason or logic, but if religion is behind the issue, then they can always fall back on faith if logic gets too uncomfortable (which it often will). Sorry if I stepped on your toes, but that has been my experience.

The Bible is the start but the interpretation is where people try to use logic (or abuse it to convince someone of something it doesn’t say).

In many cases a person is going to say “my pastor (or whatever) said it so I believe it” but not every time.

Really I get what you’re saying, in general. Many Christians piss me off and I’m one of them. Maybe most of them do. I’m just saying that this is an issue where some people are reachable and if you just act like nobody can be reasoned with, that can be a missed opportunity. And it’s especially unhelpful to discourage others from trying.

Sure, but I don’t have that much energy to keep beating my head against those walls for the small percentage of successes I might have. It’s not my job to teach every epistemology.
