My mom was in Yellowstone, and she saw a young Japanese woman walk right up to a bison with her camera and her boyfriend in tow. The animal casually flicked its head, and the woman flew several yards through the air. She had a pretty good cut, but I think she survived. AIUI, bison have killed more people in that area than bears and wolves combined. ---

Add in the idjits that walk out onto active geysers and get parboiled and Yellowstone has a pretty hefty body count. We might want to remove all the warning signs completely Think of it as Evolution In Action! ---

Gilbert decided he wanted to get out for a picture. Gil’s wife tried to convince him to just stay in the car and photograph them, but he insisted. As he photographed, he got closer and closer, eventually situating himself between the cow and her calf. The huge cow took offense and charged him. Gilbert dashed toward the car, but George, afraid his car would get dented/scratched drove off. Meanwhile Gilbert sprinted like mad and eventually got into the moving vehicle. ---

These massive herbivores are deceptive, since we almost always seem them just lumbering around munching and glaring. I’ve seen an adult male buffalo go full-bore after an incautious lion (rather than just the usual posturing to intimidate) and it’s shocking how quickly they move when they want to. The lion was quicker, but not by much. ---

They like to nibble on ‘grass’ and willows in our yard. I’m fine sitting on our low deck as long as I have an escape into the house. They don’t bother me, I don’t bother them. If there are moose in the yard, my wife and I warn each other (be careful if you step outside). When an animal appears to lumber around and not be afraid of anything, there is a good reason for that.
