I can think of a half-dozen ways a couple of F-16s could take down a barely piloted passenger jet without ramming it. ---

But they would need to make some kind of physical contact, and if it were close to its target, there might be little time to finesse it. The pilots clearly thought they might not be coming back. ---

I don’t blame them one bit. I’m sure the alternates would be thought of and tried before things got down to going all Ben-Hur on it. Just pointing out that the people flying that plane weren’t what you would call highly trained. Make them panic and get out of the envelope and they’ll crater right quickly. ---
