I hope I wasn’t the only one forced to read [The Man Without a Country (1863)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Man_Without_a_Country) in seventh grade. Actually, it was kind of interesting, but at the time I didn’t realize it was written during the US Civil War as a warning about betraying the United States. The main character was charged with treason as an accomplice to - Aaron Burr! Maybe that story should be required reading to some of the insurrectionists. ---

I’ve only every heard it called Diego Garcia by the U.S. military, and there’s basically nothing there other than the naval / air force base, right? I mean, I’m British, I knew there was an important U.S. military base on Diego Garcia, but I had no idea it was a British Colony. I’ve never heard of “BIOT”, and I’m obviously not alone in that. I could forgive a young American sailor or military contractor who is transferred there (from Guam, for example) for not realizing the sordid colonial history and that they are under British jurisdiction if they commit a crime on Diego Garcia. It’s not like they are living in the middle of Germany or the English countryside. ---
