It’s definitely not what I’ve been saying. The insurrectionists who stormed the Capitol aren’t “retarded”. They aren’t “short-bus people”. They don’t have “brain damage.” That’s a convenient excuse. These are average, every day Americans. It’s just some of us don’t actually believe in democracy. That’s painful and hard to face but that’s the way we are. Some of us are willing to throw aside the Constitution, and the law, and higher principles, and basic decency, when we don’t get what we want. Some of us Americans are actually fairly awful, and it’s not because of “brain damage.” Also, I’ve mentioned this a couple of times on this board, but I literally rode the short bus when I was a kid. I was in special education programs throughout most of grade school and into high school. And I never stormed a government building. And I’m _really_ fucking tired of people, including a lot of posters on this board, using these terms as insults. People who do reprehensible things aren’t retarded. They aren’t short-bus people. They don’t have brain damage. They’re reprehensible people. So all of you, yes, including many of you on this board, who talk like attorney Albert Watkins about people who do things you don’t like: Fuck you. ---

@Knowed_Out, I appreciate the apology. But, just to be clear, I’m not upset because you accidentally insulted me. I’m upset because being enrolled in special education is stigmatized, and your comments were part of that unthinking, reflexive stigmatization. “Riding the short bus” is shameful in our society. In my personal life, I have to be very careful to whom I reveal that I literally rode the short bus, and how much to reveal to them. On this board, which is supposed to be dedicated to fighting ignorance, multiple posters will unthinkingly use “special ed”, “ride the short bus”, and similar terms as insults. It’s not that they’re not thinking that some other board members, or readers, might themselves be or have been in special ed programs. It’s that they don’t even consider that using those terms as insults in and of itself is an act of shaming, stigmatization, ostracization, and Othering.
