The list of atrocities attributed to the loving deity is quite large, while the deity’s foe appears to be, one might say, mostly harmless. ---

I think one of the concepts is that The Devil/Satan isn’t really a foe of God, he’s a foe of humanity. God is all-powerful, he doesn’t have any foes. He could erase Satan from existence at any time and doesn’t do so for His own reasons. I’m trying to think of a good analogy. Consider you live in a neighborhood with a really awful neighbor. This is a guy who tosses garbage in your front yard as he walks by, plays loud obnoxious music at all hours of the night, makes catcalls to women and gives snide insults in your interactions. There is nothing good about him. Just a total asshole. When you catch him in a crime, or violating some city ordnance, you call the cops or report him to some authority or another. Now, compared to the government, he’s small potatoes. The government has committed all kinds of atrocities. You can say the government is the real evil, compared to the government this neighbor is nothing. Instead of reporting him, rebel against the government. That’s not a perfect analogy, I know. But I think that’s how sane Christians view things. Obviously God allows a lot of awful things to happen, or has directly caused them. But also good things. Ultimately, God is the authority to appeal to, to try to appease. Just as a normal citizen tries to obey the law, so a Christian tries to follow the tenets of the faith. And while Satan is relatively powerless compared to God, just as your asshole neighbor is relatively powerless compared to the government, Satan is someone you can resist, just as your neighbor is someone you can do something about. Since people are effectively bashing Christians in this thread, I thought it would be useful to give a bit of perspective for how at least one Christian looks at it. And Kristina Karamo is batshit crazy, and using Christianity to justify the fucked up shit she says doesn’t endear her to me. Quite the opposite, it infuriates me. ---

It’s also true that there are posters who will take any opening and enlarge it beyond recognition. The problem is, you can’t say that any one religious-based belief is any worse than any other as a reflection of reality. It’s all magic, after all. Personally, I no longer give internal credit for someone who has “the good kind” of religion. It’s all irrational, and it all leads to craziness in the end. Some cases just take longer to develop. In my opinion. ---

Personally, as a Christian, I much prefer people who emulate how Christ said to behave while bashing Christians, over people who praise Christ while hating their neighbor. ---

A Hebrew literature professor I had in college, talking about the Book of Job, noted that Satan appears before God in that book, among the other “sons of God”, and is charged by him to persecute Job. The professor suggested that the Israelites’ original conception of Satan - which means “adversary” in Hebrew - was as an agent of God’s judgment; something akin to a prosecuting attorney. ---

I have the morning news on. The weather woman just showed a map of the United States, illustrating higher-than-normal temperatures back east. She said [paraphrasing], ‘Keep in mind that the East Coast has three extra hours of daylight for warming.’ Um… On reflection, maybe I’m the stupid motherhumper. She _could_ have been displaying the _current_ temperatures. That’s what I get for working with the TV on for noise. ---

If it’s 9 AM on the west coast and noon on the east coast, naturally the time of day could be a factor for why it’s currently warmer on the east coast. Similarly, if you compare temperatures at 10 p.m. Eastern time, you’d expect them to be cooler on the east coast than the west. The sun has already gone down on the east coast, so the temperature will already be dropping. The sun is still up on the west coast, so (all other things being equal) it’ll be warmer. It wasn’t phrased very well, but that may have been her intent. (Just saw the new reply, but I’m posting this anyway.)
