Many years ago, I was in a writing workshop and did a fairly narrowly tailored (ie, inch wide, mile deep) paper about Buddhist monks. I was interviewing a monk who taught – interestingly – at a prestigious, local Catholic university. She was telling me about [**Buddhist hermits**](https://www.kyotojournal.org/conversations/alone-with-your-self-the-hermit-experience/) who live in near total solitude, isolation, and contemplation. I remember saying to the monk that, it struck me, these hermits “weren’t part of the solution.” “Maybe not,” she replied, “but they aren’t part of the problem either.” ---

I think “monastic” is the gender-neutral term for monks and nuns. I used the term “monk” to describe monastics, generically. It was probably the wrong word to use.
