A. Bison is very tasty. If I have some around the house for burgers, I definitely add fat - either beef fat or hot Italian sausage. B. Catalina bison have the roam of the island. Several times in my youth we were awakened by bison strolling through our campsite at night. They seem even bigger in the dark. C. Registered as privately owned agricultural livestock in a fenced-restricted area, it has been commonly reported that the bison were imported in 1924 for the silent film version of Zane Grey’s Western tale, _The Vanishing American._ However, the 1925 version of _The Vanishing American_ does not contain any bison and shows no terrain that resembles Catalina, according to Jim Watson, columnist for _The Catalina Islander_ newspaper. In an October 6, 1938 article in _The Catalina Islander_ , he attributes the bison’s arrival to the filming of _The Thundering Herd_ , a silent film released in 1925. A September 1938 article in _Nation’s Business_ said the herd then numbered about 30 animals and was left behind with Wrigley’s permission after a Lasky Western filmed on the island in 1925. Contemporaneous reports in the _Los Angeles Times_ and _New York Times_ state that _The Thundering Herd_ used a collection of Yellowstone National Park animals herded together for the movie. Other shooting locations were the Sierra Nevada mountains and Calabasas. Per Wiki. D. The current herd is on birth control. ---

I really like bison burgers. I usually like my burgers a bit in the rare side anyway (a **bit** , I’m not a maniac) which is perfect for them. I grab some ground bison at the grocery store every once in a while to make burgers. I’m also the only one in my family who dares to eat them so more for me!!! ---

Ironically, the first (and perhaps only) time I had a bison burger was at the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival some 20+ years ago, and the person who happened to sit next to me at the diner counter was Ted’s son, Rhett. ---

Years ago — about the time bison started to be raised commercially in Montana — I spent a weekend with a friend whose father was a rancher. He said he was contemplating cross-breeding some of his cattle with bison (using artificial insemination), partly because bison have better survival skills: cattle in blizzard conditions will allow themselves to be pushed along with the wind until they come up against an obstacle, at which point they’ll stop and freeze; bison, on the other hand, will face the storm, hunker down, and wait it out. Of course, this is one man’s opinion. And anecdote, as we all know, ≠ data. ---
