Varieties of muskmelon. “True” or “European” cantaloupe are rare in the States. ---

The terminology for muskmelon and cantaloupe is actually pretty confusing; in part because some varieties seem to fall inbetween categories, and in part because not all sources giving definitions seem to give the same ones. ---

What we eat in the States (and elsewhere in the world) isn’t the melon that was grown there, or even a descendent of the melons grown there, it’s just a related melon that is similarly colored. ---

My wife is allergic to cantaloupe. But maybe she’s **not** allergic to cantaloupe. 🤔 (Also I’m tempted to call her “muskmelon” as a pet name but I suspect I’ll end up having something thrown at me.) ---

I know I was confused as a kid when we stopped to eat dinner at a park in Needles on vacation, and a family from Oklahoma graciously shared their “muskmelon” with us. They would have had to surrender it at the border into AZ anyway, but I appreciated learning the term muskmelon and eating it, too! ---
