A new law recently went into effect in Pennsylvania, which until recently had one of the strictest alcohol sales regimes in the country, allowing the sale of canned cocktails at convenience stores. To celebrate the occasion, Governor Josh Shapiro did a PR visit at a convenience store in the greater Harrisburg area to buy a can of a locally-produced sweet tea vodka. He didn’t have his ID with him and the cashier had to refuse the sale. He’s probably got a professional driver for security reasons. Everybody at work knows him by sight. Apart from a photo-op buying sweet tea vodka, what would he need ID for? Does the governor of Pennsylvania have any sort of official portrait? It would have been awesome if he’d gone back to the Capitol, taken a big oil painting off the wall, and then gone back to the convenience store. ---

When I buy alcohol at my place and use a cashier, they ask for my birth date. When I buy it at the self-scan, the ‘wait for attendant’ screen pops up for a second or so, and then clears. Apparently, as a bald man growing a mostly white David Letterman retirement beard I look old enough. Don’t know if the attendant has to type in a date or not - I should ask sometime when they aren’t busy, they are friendly folks. ---
