Every time I’m in BevMo they scan my license, even though most of the people there know me by name. No scan, no booze. I’m 69, but can pass for 65 in good light. ---

Significant gratification when I got a double take from a manager the moment after he carded me when he realized he was the younger one. And not by a little. ---

I look younger than my age but I definitely look over 21. But I still appreciate being carded each time. I know it’s the law. They usually apologize when I’m asked for my ID when buying alcohol at a grocery store and I tell them it’s cool, I know they have to card everyone no matter what. I’ve seen people in front of me at the checkout get pissy about it and it just makes me want to smack them upside the head for harassing someone doing their job who can get in big trouble otherwise. I also remember that if I can look younger than my age, there are people who look older, and you just can’t be too careful. Maybe I’m a 19-year-old who has had a really, really rough childhood and look a few decades older. ---

I am 73. I don’t know whether I look precisely 73 or not but I sure as hell don’t look under 21. If the sign or the store manager says “we card everybody”, I’m going to get carded. What’s the big deal? Why should the cashier have to guess people’s ages, and argue with those who they guess wrong, and maybe lose their job and be fined if they guess wrong the other way? ---

The only place they DON’T check my ID for booze is the grocery store closest to my house, where every checker is either a former student or the parent of one. ---

Honestly, most of the time I’m carded it’s because I’m buying cough medicine. I don’t buy actual alcohol very often. ---

I know a checker who’s had customers get indignant at being carded for bitters, mouthwash, Nyquil, some beverages with minimal alcohol… but she’s good at disarming them with “Hey, I think it’s stupid, too.
