Well damn, I can’t find a version of that story that isn’t paywalled. Yes, they’re very common. I think what’s also common is checking to make sure nothing flammable is in range of the pyrotechnics, but that doesn’t seem to have happened in this case. In other words, it’s not the concept but the execution that is the problem. ---
