Er… it’s a pretty graphic video. I’ll let @Babale decide whether or not to post it. Answered my questions. He was, indeed, shot in the neck and it hit a major blood vessel. In my totally non-medical opinion not an artery as the blood, while copious, came out more as a stream rather than pulsing jets of blood which would be more in line with hitting the carotid. Turn on a kitchen faucet about halfway to full open and that’s how fast the blood was coming out of him. I’m damn surprised he didn’t bleed out before reaching a hospital. Even if he does survive there is also the possibility of spinal cord damage, brain damage due to blood loss/lack of oxygen… If you find the above verbal description unsettling or upsetting DO NOT watch the video. Not looking good for Mr. Kirk. Probably not good for the shooter, either. ---

It’s funny your mind went there, I was about to ask (I guess I am asking, now) if **icon** went to Chicago O’Hare, their friend not realizing there are now international flights from Chicago Midway (and, to add to the confusion, Southwest Airlines flights from O’Hare). An hour drive between O’Hare and Midway sounds about right. ---

In Ohio, at least, decapitation is one of a very short list of circumstances where an EMT on the scene is allowed to determine death. But “shot in the neck with a fountain of blood” is not on the list, so the first responders would have attempted to do whatever they could, and gotten him (or more likely, his corpse) to a hospital. ---

Yes, but that would have been a “Dead on Arrival”. Kirk was reported as being in “critical condition” at the hospital, implying there were still some signs of life when he arrived. Those might have been pretty minimal signs, but nonetheless there. ---

It wasn’t reporters. I don’t know if at this point I can go back and figure out who exactly the source was but they seemed reputable to me at the time. It’s not like “DOA” isn’t heard in the news. It’s entirely possible that someone was able to staunch the bleeding enough to get him to the hospital still breathing and/or with a pulse, but too much damage had been done by that point to fix the problem(s) before he bled out entirely. It’s not like getting shot in an arm or leg where you could apply a tourniquet. ---

My immediately previous GF works as a surgical nurse in the major trauma center ORs here. The crew she works with are the kinda people who’d be working right now on this miserable bastard in Utah. I’ve learned a few things from her along the way. They can do really amazing things to keep the probably-doomed alive for a number of hours as they try to put Humpty back together enough to live another day even with massive life support. During that interval there’s not much news, and not much time for anyone who really knows the immediate score to deliver the news. After X number of hours they’ll conclusively fail, or succeed at least enough to move the patient from the OR to the ICU. Then we’ll have some news. Right now he’s Schrödinger’s scoundrel. ---
