But most of the time nobody’s going to need to call you up; so the few who do are going to have to cover the costs of the whole shebang. ---

But your target market is the people who don’t plan ahead. The ones who do will either stick to the official cruise-company excursions, or make sure that they get back from their third-party excursions on time on their own. The ones who get left behind right now are the ones who either don’t know that the ship will really leave without them, or don’t believe that they’ll be late, and neither of those groups would pay for your subscription. ---

I don’t have all the details worked out yet. I was actually thinking the opposite would be more likely. People will subscribe. Then, as they’re on their third-party excursion, think to themselves “hmm, the ship is leaving soon, but I can just call _Cruise ‘B’ Late_ and buy myself fifteen extra minutes. I’ll be fine” They call me, I delay one of the official tours by fifteen minutes, but the subscriber arrives sisteen minutes late and misses the ship, anyway. ---

i do remember that some nearly stranded cruise people managed to get on the boat that came for the harbour pilot. he got off the ship, they got on. ---

Pilot transfers to/from large ships are kinda dangerous and take personal skill. Even moving from the pilot boat to a similarly sized lighter from the cruise ship is pretty fraught. I’m not disputing your personal experience, but that must have been both very rare and very benign conditions for either Captain to expose themselves to the risk of risking their passengers in that way. ---

It was a small cruise ship from phila to Bermuda. Not one of the really big celebrity cruise ships. I remember 4 people doing it. This was the days before camera phones… but people did camcorder and take photos. I found this. I don’t think it would work if you are 80 something, but late 20 early 30s… it does cost quite a bit. My consideration is that Stupid MFers do stupid shit, and sometimes the effects of that stupid shit can spill over into the lives of non-SMFs. Moreover, when you piss them off, the stupid gets amplified and can become much more troublesome. ---

However, being careful not to piss them off often results in allowing them to carry out a lot more of their stupid shit than they would be able to do otherwise; thereby spilling over much more drastically into the lives of others. Sometimes it’s not worth it and I’m not insisting everybody get into a fight with every Willfully Stupid Relative – I’ve got at least one of my own with whom I just Do Not Talk Politics. But sometimes it’s just plain necessary. ---
