BTW adding to the AD date also the date from independence as in “…in the Year of Our Lord 1801, and of the Independence of the United States the 25th” (and yes, in ordinals, no year zero) used to be relatively common in proclamations and public statements. This was just more of the performative fondness for archaic stylings some people have, they did not come up with it. ---

Probably influenced by the use of multiple calendars in antiquity, leading to official things being multiply-dated for clarity. As seen in the Gospels, which give multiple forms for the year of Jesus’ birth (which we’re still somehow not sure of: There are a lot of uncertainties in all of those old calendars). Usually they were regnal years of individual kings, but the Romans were proud of their lack of kings, and so one of the standard counts was “AUC”, from the Latin for “since the founding of the City”. ---

Over in the UK, Nigel Farage has resigned from his seat in the Commons but is running to replace himself in the by-election it’s triggered, as part of a stunt to deflect from allegations that he accepted an illegal contribution. The mainstream parties are all refusing to field candidates so as not to grant this election legitimacy.
