In the Petition of Sauchieburn they presented King James with their demands, declaring in part that they “would nae carry them deil pennies no more” and that they were “scunner wi’ thae weighty jangling plack stains pulling doon our kiltes”. It was King James’ failure to abolish the penny that was largely responsible for the great Rebellion of Sauchieburn in 1488. ---

Can’t wait to see “Plack” used in real life… You see, my dream is to recognize a Doper reference out in the real world. I often put up signup lists around the college i teach at. And, yes, I often wait til #1 and 2 are filled in, then I casually saunter by and write “Hi, Opel” for #3. I mention 1920’s Style Death Rays on handouts, and say “Thank Og” in class. But in almost decades plural of hoping, no nibbles. ---
