It was the idea that poorly educated people thought that the cigarettes had changed from the old safe ones without the photos, to horrible new cigarettes that kill you. I don’t now how plausible it really is, so I don’t want to mention the specific Third World country that the story was supposedly about, because I can’t find any reliable account of it. It’s reminiscent of people thinking that they were losing part of their lives when they dropped 11 days from the calendar in the eighteenth century. ---

Those people had a legitimate beef; if taxes or rent are due on the first of the month and the first of the month comes 11 days early, there’s going to be a problem for a lot of folks. I wonder if the complaint about losing 11 days of life were made up to discredit the people who were being charged for rent, etc. for days that didn’t happen. ---
