That’s the part about socking that I don’t understand. Say it was a sock of a long time poster. I can see no announcement for sock, but would there also be no announcement for the banning of long time poster? So I would guess just short term troll, banned, no announcement. ---

I took a look at his posts via the “search” feature. I didn’t see anything too inflammatory. I didn’t look for warnings, but I didn’t come across anything ban-worthy. ---

I know accusing a new account of being a sock is fun for you guys, but you tend to overdo it. I was once accused of being a sock on an LJ forum, so I just went along with it even though I had no idea who the original antagonist was. They were all nannies anyway, so I left a few days later. ---

Pity, because this guy was considerably less awful than the other new troll. As in, he actually contributed something to the board, even if that something was mostly teenage-level questions. ---

Per [this thread](https://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?p=21870740#post21870740), **kirkrapine** was indeed a sock. Odd practice, that. If I am ever suspended and I don’t feel like I had it coming, you’ll never see me again in any guise. Why give the site ad income if you’re pissed? ---

It has been my experience that when newish posters are banned without comment, they were inevitably a sock. To answer your question, it’s because they’re _right_ and the brilliance of their ripostes would make everyone see just how right they were if only those meanie mods didn’t ban them. IOW, it’s a crazy person thinking doing the exact same thing this time will yield a different result from all those other times.
