On Minority Groups (in the US) and Exposure To Popular Music

The reaction videos that go viral don’t go viral because they’re full of insightful commentary on the music’s structure. They go viral because the “first time listener” reacts to Prince’s “Purple Rain” as though they’re being physically Raptured.

You’re watching the wrong reaction videos.

The guys from Lost in Vegas seem to be honest. They’ve certainly panned songs.

This is rare.

One easy way for a react channel to get lots of views is to react very positive to stuff that is way outside their cultural milieu. If you’re young and black, acting over-the-top about ancient classic rock will help a video go viral. there are a couple of react channels that I like, but I tend to find them lazy and easy to fake.

These guys aren’t bad.
